Coyote Warning Signs in Rancho Carrillo in Carlsbad

Coyote Warnings in Carlsbad

I was showing property in the Rancho Carrillo area of Carlsbad and spied this Coyote Warning Sign in the hiking path near the one we were touring.

We hear coyotes on occasion in the canyon behind our house, usually at nights, and sometimes see them in the daylight. There are more and more reports of coyote activity in Carlsbad, especially in the communities with open space nearby.

More and more neighbors are on the lookout and warning others about coyote activity and sightings, via NextDoor, and sadly report the loss of small pets, or of pets being attacked in their yards on when out walking.

I'm glad they are posting signs in different areas, just in case homeowners, and buyers on the hunt, might not be aware. Like it or not, coyotes are here and pretty prevalent, and homeowners in some areas need to be careful with their pets outdoors.

Jeff, this would be pretty scary on a hiking path, and worrying if you would run into a coyote.

Hi Jeff - We're out on the countryside and have a pack living in our area, We have run into them several times while on the walking paths on the other side of the lake. They are pretty wary and don't want anything to do with our Labs or us, and they steer clear of the geese, but they're bad news for outdoor cats and small dogs around here.

Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, CRS  - not surprised. They seem to be everywhere out here.

James Dray  - there are plenty of them here. Seems they have gotten more used to people being around and while they are cautious I have heard stories of them approaching people who are walking their dogs!

I imagine it's the latter Nina Hollander

You can't help but see it at the start of the path. I dexpect some people will pay attention Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386  Sorta like the rattlesnake signage on many trails.

I live in an area where coyotes don't come around but we always worry about hawks with our ten pound poodle.

A neighbor of ours had one in their front yard, Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl .

Guess coyotes are urban AND suburban Michael Jacobs

I haven't come in close contact...perhaps  100 feet or so...and that was too close for me Sheila Anderson

Agreed Joan Cox  I prefer, too, to keep my distance.

Same here Dick Greenberg  Since they are around you just have to be smart about it. I haven't heard any stories here about big dogs getting attacked.

Joe Pryor I guess I would be pretty concerned about that, too. I know people here who have had their Koi snatched from their ponds in their yards.

Those are similar warning tips about what to do if you encounter a bear. Except for the fight back part. I think they tell you to crouch down if attacked and cover your head. However, I think my instinct would be to run. You know the joke about running away, right? You don't have to outrun the bear, just the person you are with.

Hi Jeff- I'm glad they put up warning signs for the community. Many years ago we were on Larry's hunting lease.  At the time there were rabid coyotes in the area.  Needless to say, I wasn't too keen on going out without a sidearm.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents  - that's a pretty gruesome joke but it makes sense. My instinct would definitely be to high-tail it out of there

No reports of rabies in our area right now - that's a scary thought Kathy Streib

Jeff, we have coyotes around here too and occasionally I'll see one when out walking the dogs early in the morning. Great job spreading the word and glad to see warning signs out. Many of us have to be vigilant for them.

In our area coyotes used to only come out at night however now you actually see them in the daylight hours and there is a lot of missing cat posters posted on the street corners Jeff Dowler

They ARE a natural part of rural environments, and as with other critters, when we take over their habitat and crowd them out, they sometimes adapt, sometimes move on, or sometimes become more aggressive. Part of life. I just saw this one across the creek, early afternoon, and it had run in front of me earlier in the day. We are aware that they can lure domestic dogs by sending a singular coyote near a backyard, the dog gets curious and may follow the coyote into the woods and then...well, no need to go further into detail.

Some of this same wording on the sign also is spelled out for us with cougars in our area and some signs are posted saying just about the same thing.

Jeff: Along Monterey Bay it's skunk season. Took a friend's puppy for an early morning potty walk, and the smell was overwhelming right outside the house. Needless to say, we didn't stay out there long. Don't know which I'd rather meet, a skunk or a coyote.

It's great to have signs with specific instructions for what to do. Someone's first instinct might be to run but that's obviously not the right thing to do.
