I haven’t been able to discover a lot about the sand green course, it could be a remnant of the original Red Feather Lakes Resort, from the late 1920s or much newer.
The only irrigation the fairways have here is rain, and they are maintained solely by volunteers.
If you have never played on a sand green course, I’ve learned that there is a certain way to rake the sand green, with a special 2 sided rake. One side is smooth – to smooth the sand in line with hole once your ball has landed on the “green” and the other side is notched to rake the sand back before moving on to the next hole. You don’t bring your best clubs here either! I’ve watched as players navigate the rocks and trees in summer on this challenging and fun course from our office window. This is a different kind of golf and it does look like fun!
The future of the sand green course is uncertain, the High Country Estates Board of Directors will decide if it will continue on as a golf course, or if it will be maintained as open space- either way, it provides a lot of elbow room for this small community in Red Feather Lakes, CO., so we will have to wait and see…
