The history of the home listing for sale is not always known or shared.

We are not talking the days on market history for (DOM) but the past bits and pieces of the property information shared. Understanding how the home was built, who lived there and why this addition was put on, for what in maine photo

The builder at the time of construction if alive could share much.

Who did built the house and what was his reputation? Where did he shine or come up short?

What was added to help or hurt the place over the years?

What used to be on that empty lot to the east?

Where are the barns, horse and machinery sheds, chicken house that are long gone on the farmstead house property listing for sale? It all adds to the attraction and explains much of the why this is the way it is evolution in the home ownership.

What were the people like who owned the home, what were their interests all helps make the real estate connection and explains much. The property fit other folk's needs and what are those features that each found attractive? If you could only poll them, the previous owners of a house. Or if you have listed, marketed and sold real estate for awhile you already know and can share that past housing information. The neighbors of the property for sale often know a little more than some of the house owners who have not been at the home long. 

In describing a property newly listed, it helps to have more than the room count, sizes, the property taxes, a few of the feature highlights to share.

Because the construction, the history of how the place was originally built is helpful in knowing what is for sale now. The local trends and news in the community surrounding the home at the time explain a lot in unlocking the mystery of why the place ended up the way it did. Was the home on the main road into town when built and that traffic helped the store location or what happened to houses in that area when the new Interstate came in and traffic count changed drastically? Increased or hurt the value of the Maine home for sale?

Life helps shape the needs and uses of housing from family size increase to belt tightening to conserve and to maybe make the house do double duty too. To serve more than one housing purpose.

To use the house as a combination home and business might have happened. 

Without being a house detective, winging it on your own.

If someone famous in local history owned the place, that story usually is easily shared and remembered in community folklore. The sharing of information from others who knew previous home owners helps create the complete story for the real estate agent or broker to share to others. Did they socialize or keep to themselves? Did they garden and where if long gone, what did they learn about the best location? Who planted all these apple trees beyond Johhny? And all the other trees, which owner of the house was it who believed in planting not cutting trees? That man knew the meaning of time and good stewardship if he would not be around to truly enjoy the fruits of his labor. 

Like when you buy a car, it is nice to know about who owned it, how meticulous they were in maintenance. And in housing what they did above and beyond and why in what you can see, what you can not hidden in the home construction. Hi Andrew

I really liked this post, and that photo you used at the top in particular. There really can be so much behind the history of a home in terms of the physical components, but also about the people who have lived there over the years. It especially interesting for older homes where there have been generations of homeowners. I always enjoy talking with sellers who have been in a home for some time to learn more about what it means to them, especially when I worked in Boston where things were not quite as transient as they sometimes seem here in California.

And then there are those homes that have a history that everyone knows and love to talk about - a celebrity, perhaps, or sometimes occurences that are somewhat shocking that impact the whole community.
