Aloe trees growing in Kula Maui Hawaii

I've often seen these strange looking trees growing in Kula Maui and wondered what they were, until I learned they are members of the aloe family.  You can find them growing upcountry in the cooler climates such as Kula and Makawao.

Apparently you can grow them easily from a cutting that's been allowed to dry out for a week or two first.  They prefer a dry well drained soil on a slope, which explains why they like the Kula region.

The tops do resemble the aloe vera on my porch!  Interesting!

Hi Georgie

They are pretty cool looking, and do look a bit like the smaller aloe plants we see. They look familiar so I must have seen then when in HI on one of my trips.

Jeff Dowler After doing some research I see they grow in your area too.  Maybe now you will notice them now that you have been alerted to them.

Good morning Georgie. This is a fantastic looking tree. I never knew they grew so large.

Sheila Anderson It's in the same family as the common aloe we all use to put on burns, but a much larger version.

Thanks for your comments.
