The temperatures in Dallas on Friday, 4/24/17 was 86 degrees but the ice was nice at the Dallas Galleria. Shoppers were mingling, people were taking brisk walks, some folks were sitting at cafe tables on the main floor; others like myself were hanging over the balcony watching skaters skate fearlessly!

As an observer, what can we learn about success and failure?

  • Success propels one to move forward
  • Failure requires forgiveness
  • Success releases us from our fears
  • Failure welcomes second chances
  • Success is the result of hard work
  • Failure is a learning lesson
  • Success is the result of persistence
  • Failure doesn't make us powerless
  • Success isn't guaranteed
  • Failures pay off
  • Success is achievable

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts!"

-- Winston Churchill

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm!

--- Winston Churchill

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently!

--- Henry Ford

"Failure is instructive. The person who really thinks learns quite as much

from failures as success --- John Dewey"

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Children are great teachers. When a child learns to overcome their fears successfully they grow up to be stronger individuals focused on problem solving. Dallas-Fort Worth offers many learning opportunities. The mall at the Dallas Gallery isn't just for shoppers, it's an educational experience for people of all ages.

Patricia's Tip of the week: To create success, release your fears.

Patricia lovely & thoughtful post and I love the ice skaters! I grew up as a competitive ice skater and loved, loved loved to skate!  It's been years since I have - gone on to other sports.  It's interesting  to me in that I don't see things as a failure but rather as a 'constrast' which gives me the opportunity to decide how to change or shift & create something new or better.  I could write a post about this one as I was just contemplating 'success' on my long hike earlier today!!  Living the dream!!

Patricia some of the most valuable lessons I have learned are from failures I have had.  Failure can play an important role in our success, the only time it is truly a failure is when we do not learn anything from it.

George Souto - Unfortunately many of us were conditioned since school that failure is a bad thing and the kids with the most gold stars are the winners. Sadly, many of those with the accumulation of gold stars lived a life of failure and isn't it exciting to know that those who didn't get all the glory in school have been successful, e.g., Steve Jobs?  Thomas Edison? Michael Jordon? There is ALWAYS room at the top!

Patricia, when I was growing up my parents always watched figure skaters and then the Olympics so I always enjoy skating videos or events, brings back memories as a child....Endre

Patricia- you bring back fond memories of watching skaters in the Galleria in Houston! I watched them when I was at lunch and wished I had the skills to glide across the ice as if floating on air. There are so many life lessons to be learned from athletes

From the bayous of south Louisiana where 32 degrees issued panic throughout the land, icy surfaces were few and far between. I do remember going to a New Orleans area mall with a small ice skating rink where the brave and hardy would try out their swamp web feet on the skates.

Lou Ludwig - the topic of success and failure is very unique in that both are worthy of achieving results. Failure doesn't have to mean it's the worst thing that can happen - often it's the best thing!

Endre Barath, Jr. - The first time I got interested in ice skating was watching Popeye and Olive Oil on the cartoons. There was a knock on the back door and my cousin Johnny came upstairs. My dad answered the door and gave my cousin his ice skates. I guess my dad gave them to him because Johnny was the only boy in the family. We were all girls and Johnny had a sister. Oh, how my heart sunk. I didn't care they were brown boy skates - I wanted them so badly but I never told anyone except Santa Clause. I guess my parents never got the message.

I started watching figure skating and the Olympics after I got married and had control over my own television. I still watch it faithfully and still regret I never learned. Oh, I tried once with my kids but I couldn't keep up with them and kept falling down. Regrets, I have more than a few. Stupid! I should have practiced WITHOUT kids! I also should have told my father and mother I wanted ice skates!

Kathy Streib - I know exactly how you felt! It sounds like we had the same ambition. See comment I wrote above to Endre Barath, Jr. Too bad I wasn't an inventor of a type of space suit for the elderly and seniors to learn how to ice skate without getting hurt!

Hi Patricia - you consistently find inspiration in everyday events.   "To create success, release your fears" --- although not always as simple as it seems, when it happens...the "magic" can begin.

I like this post very much. We learn more from our failures, often about ourselves than our successes. Sometimes the failure lessons hurt more, and take longer to learn but they are more worthwhile. The main thing is not to let your spirit get crushed which can be hard. I think you summedthis up very well and watching others skate, mingle etc is a fun and worthwhile learning experience.
