The Aroma 1923 yearbook ruth garlington student

It is so old The Aroma might smell!

I have had this old yearbook for several years.  It has the name Miss Ruth Garlington, Searcy Arkansas, 1922 - 1923 Sophomore, inside the front cover.  It is a Searcy High School Annual and explains the name this way.   "The name has been changed from 'The Reveille' to 'The Aroma' for two reasons.  One is to advertise the famous White County Aroma strawberry.  Another is because it is hoped that in the future, as these pages are perused, the readers will have wafted from them the fragrant 'Aroma' of delicious High School days."  Now the question would be when did it change to "The Searcy Lion?"

Looking inside is fun.  Here is one page that probably shows how the guys wore their hair in those days.  Handsome, weren't they?  If you have history of Ruth Garlington, share it.

Her answer wouldn't be Willa B Gay today I imagine, LOL. You know, there's something to be said for photos in which people aren't producing fake smiles.

Barbara, Ruth Garlington is, or was, my Aunt Ruth. She was Ruth Fuller, teacher of biology, chemistry and physics. Probably taught every student who went through Searcy High School during the years she taught. She also directed the Jr. Revue for many years. In fact, I think she originated it as a moneymaker to finance the Jr-Sr Banquet which she also directed. She was the Jr class sponsor and sponsor of the Sr National Honor Society. She graduated from SHS, then received bachelor's and masters degrees from Galloway College. She was a charter member of the Searcy PEO, a member of the American Association of University Women, and she served on the White County Library Board for many years. Will bet your Roger will remember her well.

I have the 1920  Aroma featured Here.

I am excited about Mrs. Ruth Garlington Fuller owning the 1923 Aroma.

Aroma was the name of the strawberry grown in Searcy and surrondings.

We need the pic of Mrs. Ruth!

Billy, I knew that I had heard the name before but couldn't remember why or when.  Being the super sleuth that you are, you straightened me out quickly.  Thanks for all that information which will now be online forever, we hope.  Anita had talked to me and called her name.  We have you set up to go see the old homeplace!

Don, I will try to upload Miss Garlington's picture later today.  The one in the blog you brought back was called The Revielle wasn't it?  I thought I had done a blog from an old yearbook and you are so good at finding them.  Thanks.

The one in link above is Aroma. I did one on 1942 Revielle.

I can't find the blog but here's what I said.

I bought a 1942 Searcy High School yearbook called Revellie on eBay previously owned by Lucille Harwood and she wrote a story about the Searcy Volunteer Fire Department that was published in the WCHS bulletin. Her father, O.D. Harwood kept a barrel of "white lightning" in the attic during Prohibition to serve to his card party guests many of whom were fire fighting volunteers. One Sunday night lightning struck their radio aeriel and set the attic on fire. The fire fighters responded quickly. It seems there was a state inspector in town and the crew blocked his entrance to the attic because they didn't want him to see the stashed liquor. In gratitude, Lucille's mom, Margaret, prepared a  Prohibition Egg Nog for the crew Here's the recipe

6 eggs, 1 pt. whipping cream, 1 qt. milk, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup white lightning, 1 tsp. vanilla, sprinkle nutmeg if desired.

That is not her. I think she is the woman in a white dress, top row, on the left, as one looks at the picture. Could you blow this person up? Not literally, you know what I mean. Enlarge the picture.

Don, that is so much better.  The lightened picture is easier to see.  I can almost feel sad for some of the students, especially the guy on the front row, left.  He probably had no clothes to dress up for the picture day and is embarrassed about the whole thing.  I see you were able to erase the boy's head that was in front of the lady you think was Ruth.  I need to learn to do all those handy tricks.  Thanks for doing it!

Thanks, Don. Are you doing all this from California (here I come?) I've asked Bill Fuller to help me ID Aunt Ruth. If this enlarged pic. is not here, then I say she was absent when the picture was made. I have spoken.

Yes, we do, Barbara. He can do almost anything we ask of him. I've talked with Bill Fuller who confirms the picture of Ruth on the back row. I think she also played on the basketball team.
