Tesla Solar Roofs = Green ROI?

Tesla Solar RoofsIs a Tesla Solar Roof the answer for big Green Return On Investment?

I love anything Seattle Green Homes related so I wrote an article about the new Tesla Solar Roofs over on my Rain City Houses blogsite.  It got me thinking that you guys would be a great place to poll what you think about the potential for ROI for putting this system on a property.

As an aside, I love this product no matter what and depending on your roof size, it isn't at all necessarily cost prohibitive to consider a Tesla Solar Roof on your home.

From a Seattle homes resale point of view alone, I see loads of ROI.  The name Tesla is bling enough to really stir some interest, but the fact that the traditional big ugly solar panels are a thing of the past is a huge boon for the green home building industry.  Tesla Solar Roofs go beyond Seattle green real estate, though.  These solar roofs should go on Seattle luxury homes, Seattle floating homes, and more and despite the higher price will likely be as sought after as the Nest home systems as the new "it product" on the must have list for Seattle new construction. From a cost point of view, there are options.  When looking at your coverage, also consider that there is potential for a 30% tax credit.

As a side note, environmentally speaking, how effective will the Tesla Solar Roofs be in Seattle?

How much energy can we actually procure in Seattle and store from the sun?  From everything I have heard, if you have the maximum 50% tile coverage with active solar cells on the roof, then we should be able to have enough solar power to store energy in the Tesla Powerwall.

Storing the Sun.  After this last winter, wouldn't that be nice?

Tesla offers the ability to purchase more than one Powerwalls at a price of $7000 each to store energy. I like this as an alternative to a less environmentally friendly power generator - especially in my case where my home is over the water and no matter how quiet you can get a generator, it is never going to be that quiet.  I love the idea of the clean living that Tesla is offering and the absolute disruption that this is going to being to not only the roofing industry which is in dire need of a change, but also home energy is due for a face lift.  This is a really cool option.  What do you guys think? Have you tried the online calculator they offer for estimating your costs and savings associated with the Tesla Solar Roof on your property?

Remove the 30% Tax Credit and these solar roofing tiles are no longer a viable choice.  Will they add value? That depends and can actually cause home sale problems if the roofs are financed.
