Why Are You Ringing My Client's Doorbell?

Real Estate Agent with Bill Cherry, Realtor 0124242

Some things I just plain wonder about.  Here's one of them.

How do many Realtors rationalize that it is OK to ring my client's doorbell and ask to show my listing?

"I'm showing my buyer clients some homes in this area, and we noticed the "For Sale" sign in your front yard.  Wonder if you would mind us taking a look while we're here? "

Didn't happen one time....it happened 17 times during the past four weeks.

Seventeen agents were either unfamiliar with the Realtor Code of Ethics or they didn't think it applies to them.  Interestingly, that fits the definition of narcissism.

I suppose things like this are more likely to happen in large towns like Dallas, although I don't recall it being a problem when I had my Houston agency.

But it's not like that in a small town like Galveston.  Plumbers, auto mechanics, bank loan officers, Realtors and even churches had better be on the up and up, or within moments they find themselves "non-personed," and they might as well close up their shop.  Word travels quickly!

In a big city, enough people move in and out every day that it's not so important for them to please everyone.   But that's just a guess.

I must admit, I've done that only once.  It was way back at the beginning of my career in 1981.  It was a FSBO.  And, it was before cellphones.  I had out-of-town clients in the car who saw the sign as we drove by on our way to another home. The FSBO graciously let us in, and it was quickly decided this house wouldn't meet their needs.

But, I do agree with you, it is not a good thing to simply knock on the door. Call first!
