My interest in Shell Art started on a trip years ago far away from Vernal, Utah. We spent one day on Sanibel Island, Florida where we found shells bountiful and colorful. Sanibel Island is named as the Best Shelling Location in the Northern Hemishere.
Visiting the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island where we found shell art I was determined to create my own Sailor's Valentines. I took many years deciding which box to start with. Since then I have created many and entered them in The Sanibel Island Shell Show.
Sailors were known to bring these home to their loved ones after a trip out to sea and most had an endearing message created with shells on the valentine. They are made in an octagon wooden box.with a glass front. The single valentine shown below was made for my husband's office and is more traditional with earthly colors.
