Austin’s “Keep Austin Weird” slogan is celebrated through activities, mind set and the way Austinites perceive things, especially art. It’s Christmas Day at Lala’s Little Nugget every day…yes, you heard right they have perennial holiday décor at this Brentwood strip-mall dive bar every day and it has been open since the 1970’s! They must be doing something right running a small town Tavern with year round Christmas décor and offering up plenty of Christmas Cheer!
There was a scare that the string lights might be turned out for good in 2015 but Crestview residents and service industry veterans banded together to save Lala’s! There are now 15 owners of Lala’s with 2 who run the daily operations. Max Moreland is proud to be one of the 2 who actively manage the business. They basically kept the original state of the bar making just a few upgrades, like adding a patio (which shares with the next door new Stubbs Bar-B-Q), replaced the bar countertop and brought in more liquor and beer choices. They made sure they kept the legacy alive by retaining the original bar’s ambiance and character of days gone by!
I love they took the cheesy holiday décor up a notch adding a Santa Claus sculpture with his sleigh plus some additional adornments scattered throughout the bar. This way, the laid-back crowd who still likes the “Stuck-in time” vibe as they play pool, foosball and plugging coins in the juke-box listening to plenty of old favorites, still have a place to hang.
