Memorial Day Facts You Didn't Know...

  • Originally known as Decoration Day, May 30th honored the 620,000 soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Soldiers graves were decorated with flowers, wreaths, and flags.
  • In 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The principal speaker was General James A. Garfield, who would become our 20th President.
  • After World War I the holiday was meant to honor all American soldiers who had died while serving in the military.
  • It wasn’t until 1967 that the name was officially changed to Memorial Day. It became a federal holiday in 1971, and shifted from May 30th to the last Monday in May.
  • It is customary for the American flag to be flown at half-staff until noon, and then raised to the top until sunset.
  • In 2000, Congress passed and President Clinton signed a law that encourages all Americans to stop what they are doing at 3 PM on Memorial Day to remember and honor those who have died serving our country.
  • There are more than 400,000 soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery. On average, there are 28 burials each day.
