They Don't Quit The Job, They Quit The Leader

leadership

Your employees and team members do not quit their job, they quit your leadership or lack there of. I was listening to Darren Hardy speak on this topic in his Darren Daily this morning and it struck me as true. Then I began to wonder, what kind of leader am I? What kind of leader are you?

Darren gave 6 reasons why team members quit and it's a staggering 1/5 presently are looking for greener pastures. People do not leave jobs, they leave leaders. Why?

career search

Here's the Top 6 Reasons Darren Hardy offered and my take on them:

1. They are over worked and burnt out.
This business may be your life but it ain't theirs. They want to go home at a decent hour and have simple things like coffee breaks and lnon-working lunches. You may be a workaholic, but they can't be expected to be. In fact labor laws insist they aren't.

2. Their time is not respected outside the office, they need rest.
I beat this drum often. Rest & Recovery is essential to top performance. When your team goes home they need to be able to count on their time off being true time off. Don't impose yourself on their free time.

3. They are micro-managed. Do you look over their shoulder? Do you constantly interrupt their flow to put your stamp on the work? Hire people you trust and you know are competent and then get out of their way so they can do their work. No adult wants a babysitter. Give them room to perform, improve and even surprise you. They are going to make mistakes, as you did (and still do) those are teachable moments. Some of my assistants have streamlined "my way" for a better way...I gave them room to do so and was open to receive it.

4. Opportunities for growth are not provided.
My assistants were always shown day one how they could advance to TC (transaction coordinator) which paid more; they could also advance to Realtor and Buyers Agent and so on. I always let them see this was step one of many, not the only step. It motivated them to be better at their current position so they were offered a better one.

5. Their poor performance was tolerated too long. You allowed things to get too off track by trying to be the "nice boss" or worse, you were the absentee leader. Now the relationship is strained and your team member is despondent because what was tolerated for so long is no longer tolerated and the sudden accountability drives them away. Or worse, they stay and your good employees leave for a better way. You can also argue the position they filled wasn't as rewarding as it could have been if they'd only been shown the proper way sooner.

6. They are not feeling appreciated or valued. My sales trainer friend Darren Cecil always says, give "strokes", because people are stroke derived. Picture a kitty purring in your arms while you stroke her or a child cuddled in your lap and you stroke his hair...strokes are compliments, acknowledgment and encouragement. Everybody likes an "at-ta-boy!" or a pat on the back, a "good job!", "Great thinking" or even just a simple "Thank You." Gratitude is sunshine for the soul and it grows loyal and dedicated team members.

leadership

Darren Hardy recently trained my group for 3 hours and one of the things he shared stuck with me. He said "Leadership is hard, because when there is a mistake, it's your mistake no matter who on the team caused it. But, when there is a win, the team won, not you, the whole team gets the credit. You have to own your leadership: you enjoy the victories and the buck stops with you when there's mistakes."

I've been thinking of building a "team" - or at least hiring agents - over the past 3 years and it's like everyone is looking for a "mommy". Sorry, I need people around me who are self motivated, who want success like I want success, not have it given to them on a platter. Now I hire people for specific tasks and know they will be done.

Of course if they were THAT self motivated, they'd want to run their own team.

Team leader- You are the leader if you have leadership skills and able to provide leads to others. If you do not possess the above wanting a split of leader's commmission perhaps you should just manage yourself.

Brokers- You pay the rent. If you charge arm and a leg may be agents should all get their own broker licenses work from their home.  In CA many rookie agents possess a broker license and many are lawyers.

Good morning Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, CRS ,

What a great post! Congratulations on a well deserved featured post. Leadership is not easy..the reason I love my office is because it's a place where all of your points are taken into consideration and addressed.

I tend to focus on Number 4 and 6 because your best people seek opportunity. I have communicated to two of our people that I would give them first right to purchasing the business and make it where they can afford to do it. They know I can't work forever and I never want to be that egocentric person that says without me you are nothing. I should be expendable also in my approach so they know they can be the ones.

This is a very good post and points that I needed to re-read. Leadership is hard, especially when you want to do it well.

I think I'd add at least another one to this list, Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, CRS ... Leaders must actually listen too.  It's not a one-way street with the "team" doing all the listening and reacting.  It's not easy to be a good Leader, so when we find one ... we've found gold ...

Great article..I love Darren Hardy..Three things I do as a leader

1.  It's we and not I

2.  I help build people who I come across

3.  I am honest and respect all

And still keeping the vision in mind..

I agree with Gabe Sanders . The expectations change when your workers are over indulge youngsters that expect leadership to pamper. Or when they think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Expect the boss to spoil the same way they were raised.

Good article. I think people also leave because of unmet or unrealized expectations. Hard word eventually produces results and everyone wants to work with the winners. Some leaders are not really leaders only managers and there lies another problem.

Yes, good point, expectations need to be clear upfront and revisited regularly as they do tend to change or evolve over time.

Interesting post. I have no desire to join a team so wasn't sure what your point would be, and it sure made sense.  Your last statement is also why I don't want to get my brokers license and be my own shop.  I'd rather have a broker to fall back on for questions and advice, not necessarily to be the fall guy.

Not sure how this applies to most independent contractors except to say that leadership is essential to an agency's success. I also agree that leadership or lack of strong leadership are primary reasons why RE agents will terminate their agency agreements.
