While visiting my shoe repair shop yesterday, I was happily surprised at the opening of a fabulous new store next door. I ended up celebrating Doughnut Day at Five-O Donut Co . The name fits because it is located on Ringling Bouelevard right down the street from the Sarasota Police Department and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The small space is warm and welcoming, decorated with a police motif including an old time logo of a police officer with a nightstick and a car door painted like a squad car's. It has mock-brick paneling, a navy-gray color scheme, along with corrugated metal details, exposed wood and farmhouse lights. The "DO-NUT CROSS" crime scene tape was cute and the scent of the donuts baking was heavenly. The owner, Christine Nordstrom, is having fun with it and based on the line out the door, it is going to be a great success. She has been operating her downtown shop, Sift, as well as several stands filled with yummy baked goods at farmer's markets up and down the west coat. She is known for her scones and cookies but is looking forward to appealing to those of us who are more the junk food junkies - we who cannot walk past a donut without eating it. And, the selection is marvelous along with the reasonable prices. If you are a basic donut person, the classics are here but take a walk on the wild side and explore the decadent toppings including the Elvis donut with bacon and banana. For those of you who are more health conscious, go with the fruit topped donuts. But honestly, this is a place to put aside all thoughts of diet and healthy food and to just savor the fabulous choices that await you. They offer yeast raised donuts, cakes and croissants along with beverages including infused milks, Cold Brew and Awesome Coffee. Christine would like to eventually be open for lunch as well but right now she is achieving her goal of providing Sarasota with the best darn donuts in town. The space is small, seating for around 20, but I am a brown bagger and like to bring them home and savor them with my own fresh coffee while sitting on the dock watching the blue herons and cranes watching me with envy.
The small strip center location is poised for the revival of the neighboring area. There is a chance that the Legacy Trail will be extended along the nearby railroad tracks and there is talk of redevelopment in both residential and commercial projects that will bring a huge increase in business to the shops. Christine's success, however, will not hang on the future plans... she is an amazing sucess right now and I will be a steady and thankful customer until I can no longer fit through the door!
