When I was younger, my idea of fun was quite different than it is now. Thank goodness for paradigm shifts because I’d miss the mark if I was out every night drinking, dancing and carousing. When I think about all the times I did things like that, it’s as if I wasn’t the one doing them, but rather, someone else did them in my name. It’s a funny thing about age. The older we get, the more “establishment” we become, and the realities of our past become memories that fade along the way.
My idea of fun today has more to do with our students and our real estate school. I still love being out of the house with my husband, but our jaunts are much more civilized and less fool hearty than years gone by. I enjoy teaching, and sometimes health issues make it difficult, but I like to think I can persevere. My idea of fun is to stand (more sitting nowadays) in front of a class and take a concept that is completely foreign to them and watch their faces as I explain it in a way they will understand. To me, it’s great fun to have a student “get it.” When I ask the class how they did on a chapter quiz, and many of them smile, nod their heads, and volunteer how many questions they got wrong, it’s fun to see them meeting the challenge.
My idea of fun is to see another person succeed. I am not greedy. I don’t have to be the center of attention, I no longer must win, I no longer want to be the only one who knows something. I don’t have to prove myself anymore. I’ve arrived. After all these years, I finally have arrived and I pretty much know what I’m talking about most of the time. That’s such fun for me because when a student asks a question, I can answer it without hesitation. There just aren’t that many more questions out there about the practice of real estate that I haven’t yet heard.
Life can be ironic. Without calling names, I can tell you there are people in my life who do not value me. They don’t want my advice, they think I’m old and in the way, and some are even disrespectful about it. My idea of fun does not include those people. I have found the most important thing in the world to me. I want to make a difference to someone, and my idea of fun is when I know I’ve made a difference to a student.
We run our Fast Track class every month, and each month I get to have fun. If you’ve been thinking about a real estate career, let us know if we can help. Not only would it be an honor to serve you, but it would also be great fun.
