How to Increase the Value of Your Home - Garden Spaces

An outdoor office, a quiet place to read, a cozy setting to enjoy another's company or for meditation.

Creating relaxing outdoor spaces help increase the value, current enjoyment & interest of your home!

This is the first in a series of design inspirations co-written with Livia Drennan, founder of Your Story by Design,  Oakville, Ontario. This post describes how we created two lovely outdoor spaces:

The Why?

We were becoming bored with the familiar setting of table with chairs around on the patio. It looked okay,… but wished there was another place, somewhere tucked away, where we could more fully relax, or read, lie down or have a nice conversation…

In our part of the world, near Toronto, Canada there are only a few months of warm weather. We are lucky to get 3 months when one can truly enjoy the outdoors to the fullest.

The Process

One day last summer, we looked around our beautiful backyard and had a vision of little separate nests where one could relax in dry comfort.  So we designed two spaces, nestled inside original garden recesses, without taking too much away from the lush lawn area.

Pond and Deck

Here is one corner, where we have a small pond with a waterfall feature.  We built a cedar deck just above  ground level around a large maple tree.  Several stepping stones draw you in…

Deck Space

The wooden deck semi-hugs the pond, which we love a lot!

This is a place for reading, sleeping, meditating. The maple tree provides a natural canopy and cover from too much sunlight. It is wonderful to fall asleep here, listening to the water fall gurgling or watching the koi fish frolic in the pond. Sometimes we even picnic here on blankets, as our family and friends are attracted by this small piece of heaven. When children come visit they usually head straight towards this little garden oasis!

We placed a mirror with the shape of a window, providing more depth, making the space look even more like a living room:

The other corner is a small “conversation room”, with wood chips as ground cover. The initial design idea involved patio stones on the ground, but we quickly changed our minds and decided to keep it more natural. We love it!

Garden Sitting Area

This is the place where we sometimes have breakfast, or have a drink. We like to use it as an outdoor office, as well. When we entertain, it is used as a conversation area.

Boxwood shrubs create a visual separation and the entranceway, so we keep them trimmed.

So here they are… our small backyard rooms. The other day, we mused which one do we like the most, and could'nt not make up our minds. That’s because they are so unique, and we use them for different purposes… yet they feel like they are part of the same garden.

So, what do you think about our outdoor living rooms? Do you have a little place in a corner of your backyard that is out of the ordinary, where you can just be?

We hope you enjoyed this little taste of outdoor inspiration. If you did, and are interested in more stories, please follow or subscribe to the blog series.

Thanks for the inspiration, Edward.  My outdoor space is very under utilized.  Looks like I have some work to do before I can relax.
