I hear a lot of ads on talk radio for attorneys that can help get you out of time shares.  It's probably a pretty easy ambulance to chase.  Timeshares have never made sense to me.

Elizabeth- years ago our friends had one in CO or Utah where they went once a year to go skiing.  I have no idea if they still use it but outside of them, I don't know of anyone else with one. And, I've not heard glowing reviews about timeshares in general discussion.

Chris Ann Cleland I have a sneaky feeling that the people who make out on going to a lawyer are the lawyers. I had a lawyer contact my sister, too, but turns out he wasn't a member of the Bar Assocation and had all sorts of shady things about him online. Kinda like Better Call Saul.

Absolutely.  I'm not a fan of lawyers of who advertise their services.  That is the type of business I was a referral from a friend.

Kathy Streib There doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of timeshare, apart from defaulting on the dues and taxes.

Hi Elizabeth -- while I have heard some like their timeshare, I have never been a fan.  The amount of advertising in this segment where "Free" is the price should be reason enough to avoid this kind of  real estate transaction.  I'm sorry your sister is going through this and hope she finds an appropriate resolution quickly.

Michael Jacobs At many high-end resorts in Mexico and Hawaii, you're hounded to death by timeshare people at your hotel, of all places. They offer you a free breakfast or a credit on your hotel stay and I practically scream at them to leave me the F alone. I'm on vacation. I paid for that. I'm not there to buy a timeshare.

I remember a vacation in Puerto Vallarta back in 2001.  We couldn't dine at a restaurant, sight-see, or just relax on the beach without being hit up by a time-share slammer.  It seems everyone living there, also moonlights at slamming time-shares.
