Four PET FRIENDLY Tips for a Happy 4th of July

The 4th of July is here and it's time to enjoy the Holiday, but if you don't want it to be a bust don't forget to keep your furry family safe from the firework booms and the bursts...

We love our fireworks in Honolulu and at certain times of the year the cacophony can get out of hand despite laws restricting the use of fireworks in the State of Hawai'i. It's all in good fun but your pet might feel otherwise. When it comes to Firework displays both personal and locational, it's probably best to keep man's best friend at home away from the unexpected booms and pyrotechnic bursts that can startle and terrify your fur companions.

There are many ‘Ohana and social activities that are perfect for our pets and humans to enjoy together, but a public fireworks event, typically isn’t one of them. Here in Honolulu the fireworks display at Ala Moana Beach Park is NOT PET FRIENDLY and pets are kapu, not allowed. Remember if you plan on going out on the 4th, make sure your pet is safe at home. Here are 4 PET FRIENDLY Tips for a Happy 4th.

#1 SIT and STAYCATION…

Be the Alpha that knows best and leave your pets safely at home preferably indoors with a radio or television on at moderate volume to help dampen the unexpexted noises. If your dog or cat is usually kept outdoors consider keeping them inside for a day or two surrounding the Independence Day Holiday. Often times people will set off fireworks before the event, which poses an unexpected fright and flight risk, endangering your pets safety with the potential of getting lost.

#2 ID PLEASE…

Microchip your pet with your current contact information registered with the chip company. This gives your pet the best chance of being identified and returned to you in the event they are lost. The Hawaiian Humane Society  offers micro-chipping for just $15! Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and current identification tag so you can be reunited quickly if your pet does run away.

#3 HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT?…

It may seem like a solution to leave your pet in the car while you take in the Fireworks and Festivities, DON’T DO IT, even at night temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. Your pet will still feel all of the anxiety and stress but in the confines of a hot vehicle. It may be convenient for you but torturous and even deadly for your pet.

#4 THUNDERSHIRTS, THINK ABOUT IT…

Thundershirts are for pets who are easily stressed by loud noises and other causes of anxiety. Functioning in the same way as baby bundling, Thundershirts are a convenient pet apparel for both Cats and Dogs that dramatically reduces many types of anxiety in your pet, allowing them to feel more secure in their environment.

Good morning Kimo. Great tips all. Never leave a dog in the car period. Is this your pup?
