Going out to celebrate America’s independence this year? Let the fun and the fireworks begin. Go ahead and party hearty, but please plan ahead to make sure you and your loved ones get home safely.

According to AAA, more than 44 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend. Let's do our part to make sure they all get where they're going safely. Don't drive drunk.

If you’re going to party over the Fourth of July weekend, the Auto Club Group is encouraging residents to plan ahead before having a little too much to drink.

Since 1998, Tow to Go has safely removed more than 24,000 impaired drivers from roads across the Southeast and the Midwest. The Auto Club Group Traffic Safety Foundation and Budweiser provide this program to prevent impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel and risking the lives of other motorists.

Tow to Go also enables AAA and Budweiser to remind the public to always plan ahead when celebrating with alcohol. That means choosing a Designated Driver, staying where you are celebrating, or arranging for another form of safe transportation.

However, for those who drink too much and haven’t made arrangements to get home, AAA is offering the Tow To Go program all weekend and through the 4th -- from June 30 until 6 a.m. July 5.

Tow to Go offers those who cannot drive a free confidential local ride to a safe location within 10 miles by calling 855-286-9246. The program will provide transport to both the driver and their vehicle.

Here are the details of how the program works.

  • Free confidential ride available to AAA Members and non-members

  • The AAA tow truck transports the vehicle and driver home or somewhere safe within 10 miles

  • Tow to Go is provided in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Nebraska, Iowa, and in part of North Dakota and Indiana (South Bend and Ft. Wayne only)

Remember, friends don’t let friends drive drunk. Pass this information along to anyone who needs it and help prevent needless tragedies at a time that should be all about celebrating our nation’s birthday.

It only takes one impaired driver to turn a party into a tragedy for so many others.

Traffic is a nightmare for folks wanting to celebrate in Washington, DC that day.  That makes the metro very desirable in our area.

Of course, no matter where you celebrate, having a designated driver, or back up plan to get home, is a must.

Elva I sure wish everyone would get on board about not driving after drinking.  It's just isn't worth it.  In my area I hear about folks that take an uber to and from parties - which is a very smart idea.
