Not about the letters as much as the KNOWLEDGE gained behind them

In an earlier post concerning the designations that one can obtain I was not promoting the designation but rather the courses involved that were necessary to take to obtain the designation.

I agree with the comment that the majority of the "public" do  not  understand what the designations mean but they are a great way to start a conversation when they ask!  It is indeed the knowledge that I have gained listening to various different perspectives from "seasoned" agents who are teaching a specific subject matter thoroughly.  When I finished the initial crash course to sit for the state licensing exam, I was able to answer all of the questions correctly, but to thorougly understand the meaning behind a multiple choice question, short of spending twenty years in the business and learning from mistakes....the courses were well worth the amount of money and time I spent.

As far as the fees are concerned, the organizations are not for profit.  I am not sure if you are aware but just about EVERY organization who offers some type of certification has membership dues...including those Board Certified M.D.s and dentists!  Just to apply to be a Board Certified Surgeon (initial application fee) is well over 5K...and then they are not sure if they will be accepted after all their documentation and cases have been reviewed.

A recent report was released from a task force studying the concept of requiring continuing ed. courses for licensed real estate agents in New Jersey.  Keep in mind, New Jersy is the only state that does not require any type of continued training to keep the license active...Of the realtors polled, 51% said they were against it, 49% in favor.  Let me reiterate, NEW JERSEY IS THE ONLY STATE IN THE UNITED STATES that does not require any type of continued learning... Knowing the large amount of complaints from consumers now, it would be interesting to monitor the change in that number if in fact the the requirement was ever implemented over the years.

Again, it is all about expanding my knowledge base and possibly obtaining information that I have heard before, but from a different perspective.  It beats playing solitaire on the computer waiting for an upcall!

Amazing...I would have never guessed that any state would not have even minimum CE requirements.

I think it's really strange that NJ doesn't require continuing education.  Do you think this will change?

No continuing education?  Does nothing ever change in your contracts?  No issues with ethics violations?  Wow I'm thankful that VA has increased their CE credits over the last five years.  We have two year renewal timeframes and my next one has me taking 24 hours (brokers requirement).

I didn't know that NJ didn't require continuing ed. Yes, it can be a pain sometimes, but it keeps you update with what is going on in the real estate world. And yes- certification requires fees. My wife is a teacher and she pays fees for her certification.

Honestly, I do not care that others will not understand what a designation means but I do CARE what I learned along the way of achieving the designation (I am currently getting my e-pro). Great post!

Sheri.... interesting... and your message is loud and clear.  But I didn't even know that you aren't required.  I could have sworn that some things were required and had to be updated. I thought that was one of the reasons why realtors also went to the real estate convnetion once a year, to take the necessary classes or to update their credits....

Great ! You are correct about NJ Realtors and the idiocy that pervades some of their attitudes and the obvious breaking of rules and laws. Low self-esteem?

Fiduciary Duty.... Hah!

Full Disclosure.... Hah!

We are too worried about being sued because someone finds "Family Room" to be offensive!
