Independence Day - A Grand Accomplishment
One of my favorite subjects in school was American History. Sadly today, the real stories of the time are somewhat marginalized and perhaps taught more as bullet points of dates and people. One man that we have all heard of, is a true connoisseur of both the facts and the grand stories of our true beginning as a nation, is Newt Gingrich, an accomplished history professor. While some of the stories are hard to separate from the politics of the day, the human parts are truly inspiring.
We celebrate this most significant day in our history with fireworks and the waving of sparklers and flags. But rarely do we think of those brave and courageous souls that brought the birth of our country into being. And despite the amazing disagreements of how it should be cared for, even today, it survives the hardiest of tempests.
In the room below, famous characters of different political persuasions sat in the same room and argued the details of our future. One thing was agreed upon, that we should be free of oppression and able to run our own affairs with dignity and pride. These great men voted that we shall govern ourselves with Liberty, Freedom and Justice and to form a more perfect union of our states and territories.
So it was on that day in 1776, the agreement was made and the people of our land would live to be free, while oppressors would soon test it, time and time again. The good news is we had our freedom but the bad news was that there was to be a great cost that would be paid many times over in our history, to preserve it. And that Price was paid gladly. Let's All Respect It and Be Proud!
Happy 4th of July
