The Sweet Nothing of Sundays 4th of July Edition

Shhhh, I’m doing Sunday, My Silent Sunday.

No Phone, No Text, No Emails, No Meetings...Silence.

UCSD

Sometimes we flop all day and relax, read books, work in the garden, etc.- then go for an evening hike to get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of San Diego. Today we hiked a trail that pops us out (eventually) on the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, adjacent to UCSD. There's a curious building here, it looks out of place. I've driven past this for years never noticing it; it took hiking to discover the obvious.

UCSD

What is this structure located in a garden, off the main road, just North of a parking lot?

UCSD

It may be because long before this was the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, it was actually Camp Calvin B. Matthews 1915-1964 The Camp was an arms range (marksmanship training) that served the United States Marine Corp and this building served as the rear camp entrance sentry booth. Who knew? Well actually, beyond the US Marines, anybody that bothered to step off the sidewalk and read the commemorative plaque! It's amazing what you discover when you put on the hiking shoes instead of climbing into the car.

   UCSD      UCSD      UCSD

It's hard to see, but there is over 100 years of graffiti, most done by the guards that occupied this booth, under this protective plastic shielding. It's funny to read the musings of  the 1920's sentry vs. the 1960's sentries would write out of sheer boredom at their post.

The value of a precious day off:

Recharge Sunday to Take Charge Monday!

Time away from clients; time with family & friends.

Showing up to work Monday with the best of you, not what's left of you.

Time to engage your goals, hobbies and interests.

Time to give back to others; causes and social outreach.

Time to do nothing at all!

What is La Dolce Far Niente?

The Sweetness of Doing Nothing!

Whatever relaxing and recharging means to you, this all you need to know...

no checking in with the office or it's not a day off!

Hi Thomas

What a cool find after all this time. Sounds like you are having a perfect day to just enjoy whatever you feel like doing, or doing nothing at all.

On Angle's Island, SF Bay, there were barracks going back from 19 century. After Exclusive Act many legal Chinese immigrants were detained and depending on their literacy. A few good poems were preserved. Next door, the German WW2 POW were locked up with grafitti in pencil and later Arabic prisoners were detained in the same room in the 1950. You read both Arabic and English writing complain about the conditions.   What condition?  You are in the middle of SF Bay with a million dollar view!

This sounds like it should be an historical landmark! I wonder how many times a day people pass by and never knew what they were passing? I'm glad you put on your walking shoes and explored your part of the country. It is amazing what we learn without having to sit in a seminar, traning class or surf the net. What you did was use your head and not your fingers tapping away on the keyboard. I applaud you!
