Many years ago when my husband and I first moved to Brookside, we went to the Brookside Irish Fest. It was basically a few booths set up in a parking lot with a band. There was a small Westport Irish Fest too. These two groups got together and now we have one big Irish Fest, every year over Labor Day weekend, that attracts over 100,000 people!
The Kansas City Irish Fest is now held at Crown Center. The non-profit organization that runs the show strives to promote the music, food and culture of Ireland during the three days. It's a family friendly event, with activities for all ages. What I like about the KC Irish Fest is there is more to do than the usual festival activities. Sure, they do have special events for the kids, including a scavenger hunt, costume contest and storytelling area; plus several stages with live music; craft booths and food booths. OVer one thousand volunteers help make this event happen--pretty much all the full blooded Irish friends I know participate in one way or another!
In addition, there is a comedy stage--that's something you don't usually see at a festival! Plus a special whiskey tasting area, a film festival and an Art in the Park area. Finally, a Catholic Mass is performed on Sunday. So much to see! You can understand why festival organizers offer special group packages and partner with the Westin hotel for a special hotel package.
The 2017 Kansas City Irish Fest opens Sept 1 at 5pm and runs till 11pm; on Saturday and Sunday, the hours are 11am-11pm. There are various ticket prices depending on if you want extra add ons and if you buy in advance. You can purchase tickets in advance at HyVee or online; it's $12 for a single day ticket and $5 for kids 3-12. No outside food or drink is allowed inside the event.
