Scattered fires are still burning in Malabar in Brevard County Florida today. Approximately 2500 acres have burned and approximately 4 homes have been damaged or destroyed. It is unclear as to how many additional buildings and vehicles have been destroyed. The fires began around the Osage St and Prosperity Lane area.

These fires are separate from the fires that are burning in Southeast and Southwest areas of Palm Bay in Brevard County. There are approximately nine fires that started in various sections of Palm Bay. There are over 70 homes that have been damaged or destroyed. Over 8300 homes are without power.

Yesterday, these fires came dangerously close to Bayside High and Westside Elementary, thus all Palm Bay schools are closed today. I-95 is currently closed from Malabar Road south to the Vero Beach area. Governor Charlie Crist has declared a state of emergency.

The fires started on Mother’s Day and are expected to continue spreading today due to strong winds and dry conditions. There is currently no rain expected in the weather forecast for the next couple of days.

Voluntary evacuations are being done. Families are being displaced and are in desperate need of donations.  Anyone interested in helping victims of the fires or the firefighters can contact the The American Red Cross. They are collecting food, money and supplies. Donations can be made at Our Lady of Grace Church, 300 Malabar Road, Palm Bay.
