Senior Gardeners Going for the Big Win...Again
On Friday, July 21, 2017 from 10 AM to 2:30 PM, the award-winning Frank Bailey Senior Center Community Garden in Clayton County GA is going for another big win, with their 2nd Annual Community Garden Expo.
The senior gardeners at the Frank Bailey Center have placed first in the nation for two years running in the Programs of Excellence competition sponsored by the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) and the National Council On Aging (NCOA). They won in the area of Nutrition, Fitness and Health Promotion for programs that teach senior citizens to grow their own organic food and herbs.
Healthier eating with home-grown organic produce
The 2017 EXPO theme is “Community Collaborations for Healthy Eating”. Working with other nearby community gardens and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, the senior gardeners at Frank Bailey center are raising awareness through outreach and development. Their goal is to increase access to fresh food, and to mitigate diet-related disease in high-risk communities. This year's event will provide demonstrations and information on meal preparation methods that utilize herbs and spices to reduce or replace salt and sugar in the diet.

Free Garden Party with fun activities, prizes
The free event will feature expert speakers from Clayton County community gardens and UGA Extension Service Master Gardener Volunteers. Exhibits include container and herb gardening demonstrations, and strategies for healthier food preparation. Activities include games and giveaways.
Admission is free and all are invited to tour the garden and share the pride of seniors working together to grow healthy fruits, vegetables and other in-season plants and flowers...All grown organically and on eye-popping display for your appreciation.
Opportunites for learning
Attendees will learn about the many possibilities for urban and small-space organic gardening and see the abundance of food, flowers and plants that can be successfully grown in small or restricted spaces, and even in containers. Speakers and gardeners will be on-hand with Gardening Tips and local gardening info...Plus, there will be a party in the garden with fun activities, snacks and prizes.
