Good To Know Stuff If You Are A Real Estate Agent

By
Managing Real Estate Broker

"In the Real Estate business you learn more about people,  you learn more about community issues, you learn more about life, you learn more about the impact of government, probable than any other profession that I know of."

Johnny Jackson

I have been in the Real Estate business since 1979 and from experience I confirm that the above quote is spot on true!  The following are some of the things I've learned thanks to my Real Estate career.

I have learned the importance of learning how to "Sell the sizzle and not the steak".

I have learned the importance of closing without being pushy.

I have learned that people don't like to buy but they love to own.

I have learned the importance of maintaining a positive attitude knowing that my attitude determines how I go through my day.

I have learned that my physical presentation is an important factor in getting people to listen to what I have to say. I have learned to not only talk the talk but to dress for the walk.

I have learned that preparation for every situation is vital to my success. Knowledge is power and the minute my clients know more than I know about my profession I lose!

I have learned that selling is not talking and that no one came out of the womb a salesperson. I seek knowledge loving to end each day with more knowledge than I began it with.

I have learned that maintaining high expectation for myself is critical to my success.

I have learned that energy is contagious. Listening to the "Rocky Theme Song" before an appointment does more to raise my energy than anything else.

I have learned to stay away from those that wish to steal my joy.

I have learned that like attracts like and I only hang out with folks that I wish to be like.

I have learned that complacency is an issue that all real estate agents face and that is why I constantly am on the lookout for it. How do

I fight complacency? I set high standards for myself. I set yearly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and even daily goals. I have learned to give myself credit for a how well done but I am never satisfied with what was for what was is over and what will be is what matters.

I have learned that if my business isn't growing and moving forward, it's stagnant and will soon be left behind.  Nothing is ever status quo, we are either moving up or moving down.

I have learned that we can choose to strive for excellence or we can choose to strive for mediocrity. I have learned that the choice is ours and I have learned that I love excellence!!!

I have learned that when you put the people first the money comes.

I could write many more things that I have learned thanks to my career in Real Estate.... but I hope this post will be a help to those of you that took the time to read it.... and I wish you a very Happy Day.

When I started in this business I learned quickly that a successful agents must have skills at many different things. It's not just selling houses in a vacuum. You need to work well with everyone involved in the transaction, not just your sellers/buyers, You need to know the market and the location, you need to know this current issues and what's coming down the pike; You need to know how to put together a good day taking your clients to see houses, and how to find each house! Negotiation, closing sales, and more, I could go on. I have a profound respect for those who have mastered all these pieces of the puzzle. I learn something important every day.

Richard and Beth,  I love most the lesson of learning to sell without being pushy. I had a phone discussion today with another AR member ... among many other things, we discussed the various ways people manage their business and different business models.  We truly do learn in oh so many ways in this business.

Thanks for your kind words... as you know I've trained agents for over 30 years and it was always a fun task teaching the not being pushy stuff.  I call it working people, you can learn it from all the little kids, they have mastered it....

I recently retired and one of my goals for 2017 was to learn something new every day.  Active Rain makes that an easy task, some kind person just reminded me that I forgot the spell-check... I must learn to not forget to do that... Happy Day Lottie Kendall

Well said, Beth. Setting high expectations for yourself is critical. Also, you've got to be moving. I heard a guy say he was coasting, and I told him, "You can only coast downhill." If you want to acsend you have to climb.
