Rightsizing Storage Tips

For many of us, when it comes to moving into a smaller home - or as others have called it-rightsizing-the hardest thing we face is where to put everything.

Even though we’ve (hopefully) divested ourselves of what we no longer use or need, there are still items we need and want around us.

Here are a few tips for creating storage and space for your treasures:

Use Dual Purpose Furniture

Today’s benches and cubes can be used to:

Seat extra guests

Double as a cocktail table

Store extra items such as throws, pillows, games, books.

Large baskets and fun boxes

You know those cute covered boxes you see at Target, Home Goods and Stein Mart? They’re perfect for storing remote controls, extra stationery and pens on your desk, extra candles, cocktail napkins and barware, whatever.

All that paper!

No matter how much I try to digitize everything, there are still files and forms that must be kept. If you have a file cabinet but your office has been “mini-mized”, you can try this creative way of covering your filing cabinet.

Repurpose

It might be a piece of furniture you already have or one you see but think outside the box.

I saw this in a client’s condo. They took a small bar they found at Pier One and used it in their guest room for extra towels.

Closets

One of the best investments you can make are those wonderful huggable hangers. Trust me, I’m not getting any kind of commission but I’ve used these for years in all of my closets.  They keep your clothes looking neater than regular hangers, your clothes won’t slip off, and you can hang more clothes in your closet with them.

There are so many creative ways you can store the things you want to keep when you rightsize.

Kathy,

Thanks for the tips on huggable hangers.  I love the idea of getting rid of more stuff.  Both of us are good about starting piles in the closet to get rid off.  A

hi Nina Hollander I may have started using them then. I bought black ones for me and grey for Larry, then I found purple ones and have my work-out clothes on them. Love them!

Barbara Todaro you can geta a round table top at the home stores and pick a fabric and have a cover made. Or, order everything from Ballard Designs.  Put a glass top on to protect the fabric!

Hi Dorie Dillard love the term "smart sizing."

Gabe Sanders i think many of us end up that way.

Wayne Martin I agree. Take it slowly. Once it's done, it's liberating.

HI Joe Pryor sounds good. I've done that for a few of my clients who knew where they were going. We picked what they absolutely needed to keep and then made a game plan for what they needed to get to make it come together.

Michael Jacobs Since I really don't like paper and file cabinets this is an idea that works.

Belinda Spillman Me too! I've seen more and more of them in houses.

Brian England have fun with it!

You know Sheila Anderson it really is. I love buying things for the home but that means something needs to go.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents omg I'm laughing so hard. I used to get them when she'd sell them on HSN bundled so they were pretty inexpensive. I'm not happy to hear they've gone down hill, but I still love mine. What i like is that your silk tops or tops with straps won't fall off.

Hi Kathy - That's great advice, and timely - we're still dealing with that issue. One of the best techniques we're learning is how to live with less stuff - it's not an easy lesson. Have a great weekend!

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents ~ hi Elizabeth... I've used the huggable hangers since they came out and love them. I order mine through HSN... they often have specials that make them so cheap and that when I restock as I need to.

We stiill have file cabinets and have moved many ot the garage. Building homes and running a couple of businesses tends to accumulate lots of paper and contracts. We keep as much as possible in the cloud. I love multiple purposing furniture items. My TV sits on a dining hutch bottom. There are plenty of drawers for CDs and the controls.

Hi Kathy Streib - I usually get the "shakes" when I think of downsizing or cleaning things out.  (It has never ceased to be a challenge. Love the thoughts about "Rightsizing".  No shakes on that concept! LOL!
