What’s Your Favorite Way to Enjoy Summer in Carlsbad?
Summer is my favorite season in Carlsbad, although the weather year round is pretty nice so it’s rare that I get to gripe about our weather here in Paradise. There’s a lot to do year-round, but summer seems to bring on even more fun. So depending on what you particularly enjoy, here are some options – this is far from being a complete list, so feel free to share your thoughts.
The beach, of course, is a main attraction, and wonderful all year round. I enjoy the summer because the temps are warmer, and as long as you don’t let the crowds, and more challenging parking, get to you there is nothing like summer at the beach – long walks, enjoying the sunsets, dinner al fresco, surfing (not me, but I like to watch it), volleyball and yoga, bird-watching, surfing contests, and the list goes on. How about building a sand castle?
Summer concerts are always fun and Carlsbad has some great music, in particular the 9 TGIF Concerts in the Parks on consecutive Friday nights, for FREE, in 4 of the largest community parks. What could be better than terrific live music and dining outdoors on a Friday summer eve in Carlsbad? There are still 3 concerts remaining – the last one is August 18th!
Outdoor movies are very popular in the summer and there are number of options – watch for updates (at Stagecoach Park, Alga Norte Park, Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park)! The ongoing outdoor movie series in Carlsbad Village, Flicks at the Fountain, on Thursday evenings beginning at dusk, also for free, are pretty popular. This series runs through August 24th!
Walking and hiking are popular year-round but it seems more people enjoy it in the summer. It might be a casual walk on the beach, or like many do, a daily walk on the Carlsbad “Boardwalk” along the ocean to take in the views, starting in the Village and heading south. You might not be aware that Carlsbad has about 50 miles of trails, from easy to more difficult, scattered around our community and are well marked. Check out the Trail Maps and Information on the City of Carlsbad website. Just watch out for rattlesnakes that are more prevalent in the summer months!
Love outdoor recreation? How about bike riding? Skate boarding? Stand-up paddle boarding? Golf? Running?
Dining al fresco is something we enjoy much of the year, but summertime seems to be the best. Whether you choose to have dinner at home in your back yard, eat at the beach while waiting for the sunset, or take in one of Carlsbad’s many restaurants that offer outdoor dining, dining al fresco is a popular summer thing to do. And ya gotta eat, right?! You might want to visit the newest place that just opened a few weeks ago, Park 101, right in the heart of the Village at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard (the Coast Road). The Coyote Grill is particularly popular in the summer with live music.
Sunset watching is always popular at the beach, particularly so in the summer. On any given evening you’ll see people on the beach, on the bluffs or along the Boardwalk, in cars parked along the Coast Road, perched on ocean-facing balconies or in their front yards, at restaurants with ocean/sunset views (Dini’s is particularly popular), watching the sun set, often with cameras in hand. What a peaceful way to take a few moments and enjoy the end of a beautiful summer day in Carlsbad!
