Sidney Farber was born in Buffalo, New York back in 1903 to Simon and Matilda. Graduating from State University of New York in 1923 he traveled to Freiburg, Germany in 1926, moving back to the United States entering Harvard Medical School in 1927.
After graduation, he was appointed to Children’s Hospital, in 1929 he was a full-time pathologist. Receiving a grant, he worked on acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was the first person to show that induction of clinical and hematological remission in this disease was achievable. He began raising funds for cancer research in 1947.
From the early 1950’s until his death in 1973 he was a presenter at Congressional hearing on appropriation for cancer research. What you may not know about Sidney is that he is regarded as the father of modern chemotherapy.
