Stanley Wellington was born in Monticello, New York back in 1872. You could find him working as a clerk in the United States Department of Justice off and on for almost 40 years.
By 1893, he rose through the ranks to be a chief examiner until 1908. While working at the Department of Justice he earned his Bachelor of Law degree, a stepping stone to earning his Master of Laws degree in 1909. The Washington, DC bar admitted him to practice in 1911.
Back in the day when the Justice Department needed to investigate a crime they would call on the Secret Service to conduct that investigation. Stanley Wellington Finch advocated setting up a squad of detectives within the Justice Department.
Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte created a Special Agent force, giving oversight of that force to Stanley. The name of that squad, the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), which would become what we know as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), thus he was the first director of the FBI. Now you know the rest of the story. Until tomorrow keep a smile on your face and a penny in your pocket.
