The Human Side of Anna Banana!

A few of you may know this about me but most folks probably do not. Yes, you know I am a passionate about hiking but did you know that I volunteer at the North Mountain Visitor Center?  This is the all volunteer center that is at the trail head of the 2 mountains and Mountain Preserve that is behind our home. The Visitor Center is an absolutely fabulous place to hang out, interact with really cool and interesting people as well as learn a lot of new & interesting stuff. The volunteers are amazing! They are all there because they want to give back to their community and that's my kind of people.

I normally work the front desk on few Saturday mornings a month along with my husband Mr Banana. It's fun to 'guide' hikers around the miles and miles of trails and to be sure they have enough water. We normally end up sharing hiking stories which is always fun. I also have been guiding people on the hiking trails for over 20 years. Many folks get lost - and I can always tell as they have the 'bewildered' look on their face and are trying to make sense of the map. I really enjoy helping them and we typically spend time chatting and sharing stories.  Many of the folks I have seen hundreds of times over the year and we've become 'hiking buds'.

2 Saturdays a month a 'coffee house' event is held and that brings even more people.  Normally there are multiple events going on during the coffee so it's at times a lot to keep track off. We have musicians playing beautiful music, sometimes there is an art show and there are always other folks that come in just to learn the history of the area, learn about the plants and animals, birds and rocks. Oh and the kids - this is cool. We have a little library at the center. When the kids come in they pick out a book, read a chapter and give one of us a 'book report" and then they get to pick out a special rock! Each time they give a report they get to pick out an even more 'important' rock! The kids love this and it's fun to see them learn at the same time.

I can see us volunteering at the center for many years to come! We love it and all the wonderful people too!

What a fun thing to do!  Love the idea of the kids reading a book and giving you a book report for a rock.  That's so cute.

Hiking is really big in our area too!  I have always wanted to get out and explore, but a with 12 pins in my ankle from a bad break, I have been cautions about crawling up mountains and over rocks!  Maybe I could find a nice flat trail to start with!  K

Kathy Streib actually we didn't realize it was all volunteer run - which amazing in itself as it's a busy place. It's really fun to share with other people all about the literally miles and miles of trails and what to expect.

Sharon Lee it's so much fun being at the center - lots going on (except in the heat of the summer) quieter. They also have dog training classes and a really neat guy teaches how to make jewelry with silver. Plus a gift shop!  Gary is totally blown away by how welcoming everyone has been to him.  I told him that might happen and now he knows for himself what a great community we have indeed.

Jim Cheney thanks I need to put a link in this post!  And yes it's way to hot to hike past 9:00 right now and honestly you won't catch me out there until another month or so - bummer but I know I will have 9 or 10 months to hike soon.

Michael Jacobs it is the cutest thing to watch them read and give their report - they all sit around a little table and come and get us when they are done. We keep a log of what they read and what rock they chose. Rocks are numbered 1 to 20  so they keep getting more and more 'important' rocks. So exciting for the little ones - and big ones too!

Chris Ann Cleland a really cool lady created the book report program for kids. I love the idea as much as the kids do. Just to see their eyes light up picking out 'their' next rock is so cute!

PS Who knew rocks could be an incentive for kids to read!!

Kathy Schowe I totally HEAR YOU!  I had a broken foot and couldn't hike for over a year.  I started very slowly at first, all very flat trails and I worked my way back up to about 4 miles and sometimes I go up to the top and back down around which is about 5 or 6 miles. Give it a try - little by little. And always stay on the safe side - take care of you!

What a great way to volunteer some of your spare time. A couple of years ago, we went hiking in the mountains around Albuquerque and I decided then that I would like to explore the Southwest some more.  One of these days I will visit Phoenix and look you up at that visitor center!

Love this bit of personal history, Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS Those photos remind me of all the wonderful hikes I have taken on the mountain at Palm Springs. My favorite time was early in the morning and watch the sun go up over the Coachella Valley.
