Growing is Fun, Eating the Harvest is Funner

A few years ago,  my hubby, Vince, and I became members of the beautiful Frank Bailey Senior Center in Riverdale, Georgia.  Just ten years old now, it is a beacon of hope and renewal for senior members of this south Atlanta suburban community.

We joined for access to the new gym and saline pool, but soon found that the center offers a variety of fitness classes and social activities

I talked my big city born-and-bred husband into joining the garden club with me. During his working years, he'd never planted anything in his life, and always hired yard crews to tend our grass and pool. But he agreed, thinking I might need some help with the digging and any heavy lifting.

Well, to my surprise, my city-dwelling man took to raised-bed gardening like a fish to water. He is now the president of the garden club (can you believe it?) and helps all the gardeners whenever he can.

Together we've discovered that growing vegetables is fun, and eating our harvest is even funner! These are a few photos of our award-winning garden taken at our recent Community Garden Expo. Enjoy.

We grow the most delicious vegetables and herbs! In fact, under his leadership our garden  won a national 1st place award in the area of health, fitness and nutrition from the National Institute of Senior Centers and the National Council on Aging.

@William Feela, so sory to hear it. We had (and are still having) the rainiest summer I can remember here in Georgia, and our squash and tomatoes really suffered compared to last year. But we got some pretty good picks in spite of it.

What a wonderful story! At some point in the future, I'm going to attempt a vegetable garden - I'd love to be able to supply my own food!
