By now, you’ve heard about the smart home and smart technology. You know that Alexa is the little voice that’s not in your head, but hidden in a little device.

While you’re aware of these digital advancements, are you using them to their potential?

Device Options

Let’s start with the personal digital assistant (e.g., Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Siri). With a device (smartphone, tablet, speaker) and an app, you can ask your PDA to turn off the lights, adjust the thermostat, and help your kids with their homework. Alexa, how many species of dogs are there? Siri, what is the smallest country in the world? Google, what’s a trapezoid?

While you’re busy preparing dinner or catching up on bills (or simply enjoying some quiet time), let your family’s assistant answer all those questions!

Create Less Stress

Smart technology offers many ways to make your life more manageable and your home more energy-efficient. Here are more ideas to smarten up your smart home.

  • Reduce energy consumption. Call on your PDA to control the temperature in your home when you’re away, turn off lights, control the water temperature. You need to have smart devices connected to your smart home app in order to achieve these tasks, but the investment in the smart appliances and fixtures gives you more control, safety, and energy efficiency.

  • Protect family members. In an emergency, you can ask your virtual assistant to call for help, by using the “Ask My Buddy” feature that alerts the person you designate as your emergency contact. You can also program your smart appliances to turn off your stove or oven when no one is close by. Sensors can turn on lights where you need them, when it senses a person in the room or hallway. And by installing floor sensors, you can be alerted when someone falls—ideal for families with elderly members.

  • Improve your efficiency. How many times have you been at the grocery store without a list and wondering what you needed? A smart refrigerator can send you a list of what you have. A smart trash can identifies what you’ve thrown away and adds it to a list for replenishment. You can also use your digital assistant to start the coffee maker at a certain time, alert you when the washing machine or dryer has completed its cycle, and find your favorite TV shows without scrolling through the guide.
