- Your Lakes Region NH Weather Report, Aug. 19, 2017 -
GOOD MORNING FROM THE BEAUTIFUL LAKES REGION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE - Here's your weather summary for Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 -
How about taking a hike. The weather today will be perfect for an exhilarating climb up any one of a number of mountains in the Lakes Region and north into the White Mountain National Forest. The high temperature is expected to reach around 82° under mostly sunny skies, perfect for trail blazing.
The wind will be out of the south at 7 MPH, gusting to 13 MPH. Put a wheel of Brie and a baguette into a backpack and go for it.
Like we said, there are many wonderful slopes to scale in the region but today we focus on iconic Mount Chocorua, which, says Wikipedia, is the eastern most mountain of the Sandwich range in the southern WMNF. It may very well be the most climbed, painted and photographed mountain in the Granite State.
It is located in the town of Albany, north of the Lakes Region and south of Conway and can be accessed from several directions.
Legend has it that the mountain was named after an 18th Century Pequawket indian chief who is said to have died on its summit, either by leaping to his death after being chased there by angry white villagers or being shot by one villager whose wife and children Chief Chocorua had allegedly slain in revenge of his son's accidental poisoning death while in the company of the villager's family.
Either way, its presence inspired countless artists of the 19th and 20th centuries who braved the rugged setting to captures its commanding rock peak and unspoiled environs on canvas in what became known as the White Mountain school of painting. Its undeveloped beauty lures painters and mountaineering enthusiasts to this day.
There are a number of good web sources of information about Chocorua. The Chocorua Lake Conservancy is certainly one of them. Check it out here. If you love the outdoors, a climb to the summit of Chocorua will not disappoint.
Expect to return home this evening evening to partly cloudy skies and temperatures dropping into the 60's. The overnight low is expected to be 64° with wind speed unchanged at 7 MPH,
Looking ahead into next week, expect partly sunny skies through Tuesday with daytime temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's and overnight lows hin the low- to mid-60° range.
Sunrise/Sunset (Laconia): 5:55 a.m. - 7:43 p.m.
