Hastings, Minnesota Bridge Bingo

In Hastings, Minnesota "you can still get there from here" but, if you're going North it might take awhile.

The dreaded day has come when our Big Blue Bridge over the Mississippi River has been shut down to single lane traffic and will remain that way for the Summer. Many of the side streets that feed onto Highway 61 have been closed with only a handful of ways to get onto this main artery. Add to that road construction and soon the reconstruction of the historic walls that border Highway 61 and it's no wonder there was concern.

But, while everyone has been wringing their hands and predicting the worst,The Hastings Area Chamber and a committee of it's members decided to be proactive and initiated a Bridge Bingo game. Local merchants signed up to be one of the bingo squares to encourage local shoppers to support their Hastings shops, businesses, restaurants and bars offering great prizes for the winners. Go to the Hastings Area Chamber web site and click on Bridge Bingo for a list of participants and the rules.        http://www.hastingsmn.org/

Despite all the worry traffic is still moving along. Credit should be given to all the pre(Bridge)closing press and an orchestration of Highway signs and temporary stop lights. People seem to be getting to wherever they need to go with little wait and maybe just a little inconvenience. I look at it as an opportunity to explore neighborhoods I seldom get into and I'm sure Minnesota residents look at as an adventure.

Pam,

Nice article and welcome to Activerain! The bingo card is a nice idea for local merchants to put a positive spin on a difficult situation.

Pam,

I can't imagine THAT bridge being down to one lane!  What are the other options?  Go to Prescott and south to another bridge?  I will definitely add an extra hour if I come down for coffee at one of the river shops.  I've been wanting to check out the antiques in Hastings if we ever get some nice weather!

Highway 55 comes directly into Hastings and if you take County Road 42 (at the temporary stop light, off of 55) it will take you right into Historic Downtown Hastings.

Teri-I was thrilled to see you read my post. Thanks for taking the time. Hastings is alive and well despite all the orange blockades for the bridge work and traffic is still moving.

Great article and the best part is 6 weeks or less until the bridge is back to two lanes!

Pam:  I am glad to help... and even moreso when folks are as appreciative as you are.  By the way, although I love Texas... I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I taught junior high school there for nine years before becoming a Realtor and Broker there for another nine years.  After all of that, I moved to Texas in 1982.  So... I am both a Texas and a Buckeye.  Actually... I'm a Buckette... LOL.  Take care... you're doing just great !
