In Hastings, Minnesota "you can still get there from here" but, if you're going North it might take awhile.
The dreaded day has come when our Big Blue Bridge over the Mississippi River has been shut down to single lane traffic and will remain that way for the Summer. Many of the side streets that feed onto Highway 61 have been closed with only a handful of ways to get onto this main artery. Add to that road construction and soon the reconstruction of the historic walls that border Highway 61 and it's no wonder there was concern.
But, while everyone has been wringing their hands and predicting the worst,The Hastings Area Chamber and a committee of it's members decided to be proactive and initiated a Bridge Bingo game. Local merchants signed up to be one of the bingo squares to encourage local shoppers to support their Hastings shops, businesses, restaurants and bars offering great prizes for the winners. Go to the Hastings Area Chamber web site and click on Bridge Bingo for a list of participants and the rules. http://www.hastingsmn.org/
The Big Blue Bridge in Hastings, Minnesota in Dakota County
Despite all the worry traffic is still moving along. Credit should be given to all the pre(Bridge)closing press and an orchestration of Highway signs and temporary stop lights. People seem to be getting to wherever they need to go with little wait and maybe just a little inconvenience. I look at it as an opportunity to explore neighborhoods I seldom get into and I'm sure Minnesota residents look at as an adventure.
