Truman Baker Chevrolet Searcy AR historic picture

Found in my pile of photos!

This old picture of Truman Baker Chevrolet shows that they had a real business in trucks.  And I can't remember right now where it came from so I need help with this photo.  Did the business stretch from one block to another?  Where is the Main Street corner?  It is for sure a very interesting picture of Searcy Arkansas when the town was smaller.  So, Sleuths, help me out here.

Love old photos, too bad there wasn't people in them too.  I always look at the clothes to date the pictures....not so good at looking at cars and trucks to date them.

It's there in the pic, between the lightpoles. The streets were so narrow then!

The car facing the right hand corner of the picture is on South Main, there is a car on the other side of it that is making a right hand turn onto East Race. The cars that are on the street that is in front of the buildings are on Race. The awning around part of the building on the right is the original site of Truman Baker with the used cars to the right of that building. Beyond the used car area was the Armory, now gone. The building where the trucks are was Bolton's Pontiac. They sold appliances and cars. I guess Bolton's had already moved when this picture was made. Some one who could tell us the year model of these vehicles would help put a better guess as to the year on the picture. This intersection was the first and only stop light in Searcy for years. Maybe until the 1970's. It looks like the open parking space with the pick up parked in the middle might have still been parking area for the Searcy Wholesale Grocery, I think it was called. Kenny Rand could tell you that.

The highway signs say it all. Hwy 67 goes along Main and turns right onto East Race.

Sheila, they are so much fun.

Kristin, so do I!

Tammi, yes, it is hard to see the street.

The dump trucks lined up in front of the buildings look like 1966 models. They sold a lot of those types of trucks to the State. It appears to be a winter scene. With a fall new car announcement, if those trucks are new, it seems that it would be in the winter of 1965-1966.

George, thanks for that information.  There are differences of opinion regarding age but all agree that Mr. Baker was an excellent car dealer.

That was in '67. The pickup facing Truman-Baker was sitting in the Searcy Auto Parts parking lot. To the right of the pick up was a Lion gas station. Behind the nearest Truman Baker building was purchased and turned into a used lot. The last thing the building nearest the viewer was Radio Shack. Audley Bolton's Cadillac - Pontiac Dealership was still there, just not in the shot. Audley's son in law, Roger Vaughn took over that dealership and the name was changed to Bolton - Vaughn Cadillac Pontiac and remained there until about mid eighties.
