Is Your Real Estate Career Being Eclipsed?

Eclipse

In light (or should I say the absence of), our recent solar eclipse yesterday I was inspired to pen this post. As everyone stopped what they were doing to observe this amazing event, wasn't it interesting to note how everything else going on in the world just stopped if only for a few moments! For just a brief time, we all looked upward, took in the amazing sight and momentarily just stopped.

The dictionary defines the word "eclipse" as an obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer or between it and its source of illumination.  Hmmm, an obscuring of the light. Interesting.

As I reflect (ha ha) on the solar eclipse yesterday, I am reminded of making sure that I take time to stay focused on what is truly important. Yes my real estate career is extremely important, but have I allowed for the light to be obscured by things that are not really helping my career? What are my time wasters? What are my activities that are not "income-producing"

There are many things that can "eclipse" our focus on our businesses. Too much time on social media, not enough time strategizing or goal setting, or going from activity to activity with little or no time blocking. All of a sudden, our busy lives can literally "eclipse" our path. We realize that things have become obscured and we are blocked.

Use these naturally occurring phenomenons to re-focus, re-center, and to re-think. Set your goals, make plans, strategize daily. I believe that if we take time to do these things, we will stay focused. I certainly don't want my real estate career to be "eclipsed". I prefer to keep the light right where I need it.

Don't allow anything to "eclipse" what you are working toward. Shine the light brightly and keep the things obscuring your goals at bay! Shine on my friends!

Hi Paula

This is an excellent analogy that works well not only for our business but for life in general. Sometimes we have control over those things that eclipse our focus, sometimes we don't. But it's how we respond, and when, that matters.

Dear Paula,

Wow! That is some deep philosophy out of a few minutes of an interesting distraction. Ours was mostly covered by clouds. Would those be the minutae in front of the eclipse, like distractions taking you down a useless path from a general time waster such a social media?

With written goals and focus a real estate career will stay on purpose . . . . and not eclipsed.

Good luck and success.

Paula - So well written - and, yes, most Americans stopped what they were doing for a brief few moments and the birds sang and traffic and clatter subsided.  Now if we could just do that everyday perhaps some semblance of peace and civility could reign again.

I love the timely analogy. We must constantly check to make sure that the most important things in our life and our business are not being eclipsed by the less important.

Thanks so much.

Hi Paula, it's so easy to lose focus and get distracted, no matter what our jobs are, it's important to have a plan and working that plan.

As a coach of top agents, one of the things I see regularly is failure to work on our craft, and by this I don't mean lead gen, biz mgt., or production - I mean learning to be a better agent for the client.  Clever marketing or momentum from reputation can counterbalance a skill set that is being eclipsed by more accomplished agents, but not for long.  The only way to stay relevant long term is to relentlessly train for excellence.  It's also the best protection from interlopers like Zillow and Homie...

A good reminder that we probably all know what we need to do but are not doing to be more successful. Allowing ourselves to be pulled aside from what we need to focus on.

The experience to get you to the other side!

Staying focused is one of the most important traits in any career.  Isn't that one of those things we were supposed to learn in elementary school?

It is so disheartening to see agents fall into a pattern of self destruction by allowing themselves to be distracted.  Mainly these days by some damned electronic device!

Timely post!  Love your analogy and how we should take time to reflect.  I guess that's what my post was about today - reflection.  We didn't get to see much of the eclipse here, an out of the ordinary cloudy day!
