The cool cat that “came with the house”

Teeko (also known as Tico)  lived in a house in Glacier View Meadows, in Livermore Colorado.

When I first met her she was sitting outside by the driveway, as if waiting to greet me.  She’s a pretty big cat, but with her big furry coat, it’s hard to tell how much is fur and how much is cat!

I think she's a Norwegian Forest Cat; they are friendly, intelligent, good with people and well adapted to colder climates- beside all that , I think she's  beautiful.

When I listed the house, her owner told me that she could stay inside or go outside and not to worry about her.  Even in inclement weather, she could shelter in the shed where it was warm...so I let everyone know when they were showing the house, not to worry about the cat.

Not worrying about pets during a showing just makes the house that much easier to show. I have seen showing instructions like: “don’t touch the cat”, “don’t let the cat out”, and “cats are behind the closed door-don’t open it”…!  None of this extra concern was necessary, because Teeko was a cool cat!

She didn’t know her house was for sale and she didn’t seem to mind all the people coming and going during showings; unlike some cats that run and hide under a bed, or hiss and act like attack cats when you walk in,  she was curious and welcoming.

One day, we received an offer on Teeko’s house.  During negotiations, the other agent casually mentioned that the buyers’ kids loved the cat, if the sellers didn’t want her…they would keep her.

Of course the seller wanted her!  She’s awesome!  BUT, as time drew closer to closing, the seller became unsure if the new location would be the best place for Teeko.  It was a heartbreaking decision, and not taken lightly, when the seller decided that she would be happier if she could stay in her mountain home.

We double checked with the buyers to be sure they really wanted to adopt her- and they did!

This was a first for me and the other agent, too. We had never had a cat “included” with a house sale. …and just this once it turned out, that this cool cat “came with the house”.

It’s a happy ending for Teeko, in beautiful Glacier View Meadows.  I’m so happy that she met such nice people, and that she could stay in her home.  She loves living here and I’m sure she loves the new family that moved into “her house”!

Great story Mary. It's nice that the owner was so unselfish as to realize this was in Teeko's best interest. On the other hand I might feel a bit conflicted by how quickly she acclimated herself to the new owners.

Ha!  Debe, my dog would love anyone who fed her, I think...as long as they came to her house she would probably be fine! LOL- (It would hurt my feelings too.)  Thanks for coming by, I appreciate it Debe Maxwell, CRS !

Mary- what a wonderful feel-good story, and yes, how unselfish of the sellers to want to look after the interests of their cat!   And yes, it's a lot easier to show a home if your buyers aren't having to shut the door quickly so the pet doesn't get out!

Thanks Kathy Streib, it is a feel-good story!  and It can be so stressful trying to make sure the cat doesn't get out during showings, you're right about that.

Teeko sure appears happy and satisfied in the pictures.  Glad it worked out. We have a Norwegian Forest cat too.  Great temperament; he behaves more like our 3 dogs than a cat.  You nailed it; just as happy to be in or out.  When he wants in he scratches on the door, just like the mutts.  And if he really wants in, he jumps up on the door and hangs on the window ledge looking at you.

Hi Mel Ahrens, MBA, Kelly Right Real Estate !  Thanks for weighing in on the Norwegian Forest cats.  I'm more of a dog person than a cat person, so that explains a lot about Teeko, and why I liked her so much.
