Grand Rapids is not exactly a BBQ city. That said, we have some pretty awesome spots in town. With Memorial Day weekend ahead of us, and summer just around the corner, here are a few of the best places to grab some barbeque. Try them all and let us know which one is your favorite!

Jonny B’z

701 Wealthy St
Grand Rapids, MI 49506

Jonny B’z is open Monday through Saturday in Eastown. Best known for their 100% all beef hot dogs, they also have killer barbecue, rated as best barbecue place in GR by Yelpers. They serve up beef brisket, half smoked chicken, St. Louis ribs, pulled pork, and a meet sampler daily with three house-made sauces (mustard, Texas, and spicy. They also offer sandwiches, burgers, and a whole variety of sides to choose from.

Two Scott’s Barbecue

536 Leonard St NW
Gran Rapids, MI 49504

With a slogan like “Regular guys. Exceptional barbecue.” They’ve got to be on to something. Two’s Scott’s Barbecue serves both sandwiches and ½ pound cuts of pulled pork, chicken, sliced brisket, burnt ends, sausage, St. Louis ribs, and jumbo wings. They have multiple sides including pimento mac & cheese (a local favorite), smoked baked beans, and cornbread. Most patrons feel the sauces are a great addition, but the meat is great alone. They sell out quickly, so your best bet is to get there before lunch if you can. They are only 11-3 pm Monday through Saturday so dinner is out, but the lunch rush is where you’ll find long lines. Two Scott’s also caters for all you Open House throwers!

Slows Bar BQ

435 Ionia Ave SW
Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Slows menu is an extensive one. They have barbecue by the pound like pulled pork, beef brisket, baby back ribs, and wings. Among the appetizers and sides also on their menu they have brisket tacos, gumbo, and smoked beans that are noted as somewhat-life-changing. They always include daily specials and have sandwiches that you can order as well. Probably one of the most unique parts of Slows is that vegans and vegetarians can find something to eat here. Yes, that’s right: VEGANS. Their Genius sandwich serves up TVP (textured vegetable protein) pleasing the plant lover who drags their feet whenever you suggest BBQ. The Genius sandwich is vegetarian as is, but if you order it with North Carolina sauce, skip the coleslaw, serve it up on waffle fries, and skip the bun, it’s vegan. Slow’s has an extensive and rotating beer menu so stop in, settle in, and enjoy!

Daddy Pete’s BBQ

2921 Eastern Ave SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49508

Open Tuesday through Sunday, Daddy Pete’s BBQ has Pork, Chicken, and Beef slow-smoked meats available, sandwiches, and scratch-made sides. As a food truck, they switch up what is available, so you can’t have your heart set on any one thing. The baked beans are described as the best in GR as is the six cheese mac & cheese. Follow them on twitter to see where the food truck is around GR!

Horseshoe Smokehouse

333 Grandville Ave SW
Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Located near Founders, Horseshoe serves up smoked fresh and dry rubbed barbecue by the half pound. Beef brisket, pork spare ribs, rib tips, and kielbasa are all on the menu as well as southern fried chicken sandwiches, pulled pork sandwich, and Brisket Philly. The sandwiches come with fries and can be topped with any of their three homemade barbecue sauces. Crispy Brussels sprouts, regular or spicy mac, cheesy grits, and waffle fries are all 8 oz sides that can accompany your meal. They have a pretty extensive beer menu as well.

Put on your elastic wasted pants and find a bib then head to one of these GR spots for some pretty great 'cue.
