Dogs Are Now Welcome at Most Town Parks in the Town of Huntington

The Huntington Town Board has, at long last, approved a change in the town code to now allow dogs at most of the town parks in Huntington.  The good folks at LI-Dog have been really instrumental in getting this accomplished and deserve applause.  Until now, dogs have been welcomed at three parks in the town: the beautiful property behind Coindre Hall on Browns Road that runs all the way down to Huntington Harbor and the West Hills Dog Park on Sweet Hollow Road, which offers separate areas for larger and smaller dogs.  Both of these dog parks are county owned properties.  The third dog park is the area behind Happy dog at Northport Parkthe Huntington Animal Shelter. There have also been other areas, such as Northport Park, which has always been dog friendly, even though not officially recognized by the town as a dog park.

The change in the town code now allows dogs at almost all of the parks in the town of Huntington.  There are exceptions.  For now, Heckscher Park in Huntington Village is still off limits to dogs, even though there are a lot of requests for it to be dog friendly.  The other area, perhaps understandably, off limits is the Betty Allen Preserve in Centerport. I'm pretty sure it has to do with all of the wildlife at the preserve.  After all, they have some rights to enjoy their space, too.

There are some rules that the Town of Huntington has stipulated for people who want to bring their dogs to the parks:

  • Dogs must remain on leash.  (Police have been known to stop by the parks and give out tickets to dog owners if their dog is not leashed).
  • Dog owners must pick up after their dogs.  There may be waste bag receptacles, but it's always smart to have one or two bags with you whenever you have your dog out and about.
  • Dogs are not allowed on playgrounds, ball fields, camp grounds, picnic areas, and town beaches.

A couple of other rules are just common sense:

  • Know your dog.  If your dog doesn't socialize well with other dogs or with people, don't bring him.
  • If you see that someone, whether an adult, a child, or another dog, seems frightened of your pet, no matter how loveable they may be, give them a wide bearth.  After all, they have the right to enjoy the park also without being afraid of animals.
  • Make sure your dog is up to date on all of its vaccinations.

Allowing dogs at our town parks will really make the Town of Huntington one of the best dog friendly towns on Long Island.
