Am I human yet?

This post is in response to Jim Cheney's August Challenge, "Being Human." For this challenge, we are being asked to share something personal about ourselves; something that makes us human. Do we volunteer? Help others? Is there anything we do besides work in our field?

I have shared a lot of my human side in past posts, so it took me a while to figure out what to write here. The fact is, that while I love my real estate career, there are so many other things that interest me. My problem is my inability to fit everything into my life.

So I wondered, should I share....

  • My love of the outdoors? That hiking, walking, biking, and just being in the great outdoors makes me feel even more alive? That my hiking boots are scuffed and well-worn, and the only stores I don't mind shopping at are sporting goods stores? That I would love to spend time helping to maintain or even build hiking trails? Or maybe...

  • My love of writing? That besides all the blogs and other things I write, that I've written poems and a 114K word novel that is just sitting on my computer waiting to be published? That I send queries to publishers for a few days, then get busy with other things, and don't get back to my search for a publisher for a year or so? Or maybe I should share..

  • My love of cooking? That I make a point of being home to make dinner on an almost daily basis? Or that I often try new menus or dishes that I've never made before? That I have recently been making all sorts of vegetarian recipes just to see how they are and am finding to my amazement that I love most of them? Or perhaps I should share...

  • My love of mind-stimulating puzzles? That I love to do crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles and any kind of puzzle in the newspaper? I have a few word games on my phone I've been known to play when I have a few minutes free waiting for a client to show up for an appointment. I don't like the video-type games, but if there are words involved, I'm in. Or what about...

  • My love of trying new things? I'm one of those people who get bored if I do the same things all the time. Yawn. When I was in corporate business, the only way I continued with the same company was to get a new assignment every year or so. The status quo is my enemy. I think that's why I love to travel and don't like going to the same place more than once. So I'm constantly doing new things and trying new things. For example, I recently took up archery, joined an archery league, and find I am loving it. Also, I got my first tattoo at 52 years of age. I've since gotten one every year or two, and now have 4. I'm sure in another few years I will have attempted something else!

So I've already broken the challenge rules and provided the two second version of several of the things I love to do. I have to say, though, that there is one thing I haven't mentioned that makes me totally lose track of time. I don't do this thing nearly enough, but when I do, the "only for ten minutes" could easily turn into hours. Which is why I don't do it often. Who has hours to play?

The thing I want to share is that I am a closet musician.

I played the flute in grade school and high school and while I haven't really played it in nearly 40 years, I can still pick it up and find the notes I need. It sits in a case in the bottom drawer of a cabinet in the living room. Every so often, I'll just pull it out, look at it, maybe put it together and play a quick scale and put it away. I love the way it sounds, but not as much as....

the acoustic guitar. I taught myself how to play the acoustic guitar when I was in my 30s. I took a few lessons, but mostly just plucked the strings along with a "learn-how-to-play" book. I was getting good enough to have callouses and to be able to recognize the songs I was playing. I would love to be able to improve dramatically with this instrument. There is almost nothing more beautiful to me than listening to classical acoustic guitar music, and playing it seamlessly would be fabulous. Almost as fabulous as....

playing the piano. I took a few piano lessons when I was in my teens, and with the exception of a year or so of practicing, I stopped. About fifteen years ago I purchased a digital piano, the same size and number of keys as the real thing. I played it from time to time, but being a single parent and raising kids has a way of taking up all the spare time, so I didn't use it much. Every so often, I'd spend a few months playing it, and then life would get in the way, and the piano would turn into a dust collector.

But when I do find the time to play, I lose all track of time. I am good enough for a listener to know what I'm playing, but not good enough where I'd feel comfortable playing in front of someone I didn't know really well. But I want to be. I could see myself with a houseful of people, and all of us singing along to something I was playing. I play pop, classical, showtunes, holiday music and more. If I played "The Entertainer," "Blowing in the Wind," "Fur Elise" or "Silent Night," you'd know what song it was. Yesterday, I had a few minutes before I started dinner, and I sat down on my bench for the first time in months. And I simply disappeared into the notes and melodies. And when I came up for air, I said, "Wow, that was great!" It made my heart sing to be sitting on my squeaky piano bench putting notes together and making them sound like music.

A few years ago, I added a tattoo to my arm that I hoped would remind me to spend more time doing what I love. It was created just for me, and it incorporates my flute, guitar and piano. Can you see each of them?

The tattoo hasn't helped though, and neither have I. As with anything else, if we want to make progress we have to get our plan together and make it work. And I, here, in front of anyone who reads this, am vowing to find just two hours per week from here on to practice my music. And then some day, when someone says, "Oh, can you play something for me?," I will say "Gladly."

So am I human yet?

Hi Kat,

Very cool and fabulous post. Music and especially playing an instrument is a great way to escape to another dimension. BTW - Yes I found the instruments! You had a great artist draw that tattoo.
