My veggie and flower garden in Haiku Maui is always growing

My gardens in Haiku Maui are always growing and we usually have a series of ongoing garden patches, so there will always be something to harvest.  Ideally we'll start a new section every couple of months, but in the depth of winter we just let it all go to give ourselves a break.  New plants are started from seeds on a regular basis, or whenever I remember to do it.  I'm lucky to have a farmer husband who will prepare the soil and add all the organic amendments, and leaves it to me to get creative with the growing.

Starting more plants for my Haiku Maui garden

The potting bench where the seeds get started.

The current garden is very full and I'm picking 2 kinds of beans, 2 kinds of sweet peppers, 3 kinds of HOT peppers, assorted salad greens, eggplants, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, bok choy, chard, basil and cilantro.  Still to come are more beets and carrots - the second crops this summer.

Many things come up as volunteers every time, such as dill, tomatillos, marigolds, lemon basil, sweet potatoes, turmeric, coleus and vinca.  We encourage them and give them space and fertilizer.  Every day of the year we eat something from the garden, even if it's just herbs or fruit.  My secret is to just plant small amounts of each thing, and lots of variety.  I try to use the fresh produce when it's fresh, so I don't have to bother with preserving anything.

I don't have pictures, but in this season we're now enjoying avocados, star fruit, bananas and lemons from our trees.  The new crop of papayas needs a little more time, and oranges will kick in around October or November.  We are very lucky to have so much bounty!

One garden which we're harvesting from - yes it's challenging to walk through there!

As the season wears on we can just let each garden run wild and that's when it gets really colorful... as you can see here.  Yes it's a lot of work, but well worth it.  There are so many benefits to gardening and growing your own food.  They say it will make you live longer!

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 What? No wild pigs to tear-up your efforts in your garden? What gives? I thought Hawaii was overrun with those porcine gluttons?

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386 We have 2 small dogs who love to chase pigs, so they won't stand a chance getting anywhere close to the garden.  We actually trapped two at once a few years back down by the fruit orchard.  The trap is set in another location and we're hoping to get one or two for the freezer soon.

Good evening Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089. Two Don Ho records,  Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii and Hawaii Five-O are as close to the islands as I ever got, but I"ve longed to arrive and be welcomed with a lei placed around my neck.  Seems like you and husband are living an enchanted life in an enchanted place.

My wife and I love Hawaii and spend at least 2 weeks in Waikiki every winter at a family condo.  No garden space for us but love the abundance of flowers and greenery in the area. One of our favorite things to do is visit the farmers markets.  Your gardening team work certainly pays off and the fruits of your labor are no doubt healthy and delicious and save you money.  Enjoyed your colorful pictures and interesting blog.
