Relay for Life--Savannah Style

By
Real Estate Agent with Mopper-Stapen,Realtors

Well the Savannah, Chatham County, Ga.  community just completed Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society on May 9th.   For those of you that participate in your community  I would welcome some ideas on what you are doing and some fundraising ideas for 09.

The overall theme this year was Relay TV and I am guessing that -was the national theme. As a realtor with Mopper-Stapen Realtors, I served again as our Team Chair person, under the umbrella of the Savannah Board of Realtors.  The SABOR-theme for decorating our campsite was "Survivor" and how apt is that for the current real estate market. Under the Sabor umbrella we had 15 companies join the effort and as of last count we have raised over $30,000 which I consider great given what is happening in our national economy.

I would have to say participation was down from previous years-across the board -from all parts of the community.  But we had fun and decorating for "Survivor" theme-the committee went all out!!!  Lowes loaned us a truckload of palms, plants, etc. to decorate our space. We had a fish pond, the tribal council pit, the box for voting members out, the "immunity idol", and each real estate company had their "tribal color bandanas".   ( see some pixs below) Of course the most overwhelming aspect of the event is the survivor walk and the lighting of the luminaries. The event has been held at Benedictine Military Academy for the last several years on their football field and we can't thank them enough.

Some fundraising things we did as a realtor group or as individual companies to raise funds included:  realtor open house where the owner donated $10 for every realtor that showed up, (many thanks to the owner), getting a driving range to donate a portion of the bucket of balls purchased for a sat/sun. to our campaign-(plus we sold hotdogs, & barbeque-that day) , selling hamburgers/hotdogs the night of the event, we tried to do some solicitations in front of grocery stores but ran into problems-but we did have several that donated food for our fund raisers, breakfast/ lunch fundraisers at individual companies, collecting used cell phones and pdas-and doing a silent auction.   And of course there were the usual bake sales etc.

Would love to hear what others of you are doing -that maybe we can try in our market next year-especially anything that is unique and different.  I look forward to your comments.

here are some shots of SABOR site & our mopper team -fyi we had two survivors on our team-parade and lighting of the luminaries. You really can't see how good our site looked --w/out me blowing up pixs and increasing your download time.

For a while  --mopper-stapen,realtors  had the immunity idol---!! Our team bandana was green matching our company logo--- keep me posted on any fundraising thoughts--andrea

Have you tried getting a live band?

Hey, come on out to the Crystal Beer Parlor at the corner of Jones and Jefferson Streets on Friday nights from 7:30 - 10:30 pm.  You'll hear great live Dixieland music.  Come on up and introduce yourselves; I'll be playing trombone in the band.
