Blogging: Don't Invent, Don't Criticize, Just Document

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Corinne Guest, REALTOR¬ģ | Barrington Realty Company License: 471.000044

Blogging on a regular basis can become a strain. We've all been there, the mind goes blank. We ponder about what to write about next. We try to think of what to say on Wordless Wednesdays. A day passes. A week passes. A month passes! ūüėĪ Some never get back to writing and that's both a shame and a crime nowadays.¬†

Contributing to a single blog is work, writing on several is a lot more work and yet to be original it becomes a chore. So how to break that cycle of getting stuck.

  • Document.
  • Be transparent.
  • Use real life experiences to show your skill.

People want to read how good you are at your job and a real life experience to showcase that, is all that is needed. You must be honest, and document your daily experiences without specifically criticizing another person. There's nothing wrong with pointing out what happened, just no names. Try to keep the perspective on you and what you did for the other person, or if that's not possible why clients are better served by selecting you; not why they should not have selected the other.

Keep it simple, short, stick to the actual event. Not every post has to be thousands of words. Short events are easier for future clients to read.

ūüŹė ¬†In real estate there is something going on every single day. The more transactions you do, the more you'll have to document. Hopefully you focus on a niche or two and can document about transactions in your niche, this will elevate you quickly in the minds of a reader who may become a client. Show your knowledge!

Documenting is received better by all because it's real life. Humans are creatures of habit. They like knowing what goes on. They are not so interested in fake stories. For those they buy books, read Kindle or watch TV and movies. For real life they read timelines on FB as well as articles. Make sure you share where eyes are!

I guarantee, do this and your clients will be more appreciative of you, your efforts, your skills, and they become extremely loyal.

Now go and elevate your game!

Thanks for making it clear, so many people post without documenting and they will be found out and all their work will work against them.

Hi Corinne

Great advice for anyone who might be having writer's block. Personal examples are the best way to show what you can do, and have done, and others will relate to that more easily. As long as it's not all about "me, me me!"

I agree that real life experiences go a long way with blogging.  Using recent examples of scenarios is especially helpful for conveying your specific market trends to buyers relocating to your area.

Great advice, as usual Corinne Guest, Managing Broker ... I did a quick check of my numbers here on AR.  The posts that told a story typically did best.  Don't need much more proof than that ...

Say "hi" to Finlay and Fletcher!

When I want to write a blog, I just think back on my week and can find several things to write about. Problems with a Tenant, Landlord, or Contractor. Questions about buying a home. Documents. My office staff. Local events. There are literally dozens of things every week that would make for a good blog!

I try to write about "real life adventure" in my posts, but never want a client to recognize themselves and say "Oh, that's MY story". Still, our stories are educational, sometimes humorous, other times heartbreaking, etc. It's the real estate business. Something new and interesting every day.
