I am still marketing this property--given the inquiries here is where you can go to see all the property details: http://tinyurl.com/67pdnq
History is still Alive--
As a real estate agent you never know who will call and what property you might get to market. Just recently, I was called to market a property (shown above) which I had admired for over 30 years in Statesboro, Ga. I had never been in the property before and was elated when the owner contacted me about listing it for sale. The current owner inherited the property from her brother who had lived there for the last 10+ years.
The property is only 45mi. northwest of savannah and it sits magnificently on a road leading north out of Statesboro.--approx. 10 minutes from the downtown. Surrounded by woods and farm land the home forces you to slow down and look. A colonial plantation style home the house has been in the same two families ( Blitch /Lane) for the last 124 years. Know as the Blitch-Lane home by native Bulloch Countians -this is the first time this home has ever been available for public sale. (Can you imagine ?) In addition to its proximity to savannah and statesboro, the home is only minutes from Marsh Hunting Preserve which has some of the best hunting land in the area for quail and deer. (If you are a hunter you need to ck out the preserve)
The home was built in 1879/80 and still retains all most all of its original details. Although the exterior style is colonial, the interior is more along the lines of "shot gun"-which means you can fire a shot thru the front door and it will go out the backdoor with out hitting anything (unless of course you are standing in the line of fire). The interior is simple-but you have original heart of the pine floors, the foyer is large enough to entertain in, original plaster and moldings, 12+ foot ceilings and eight fireplaces. It is a jewel now, just as it was back in 1879.
The original property owned and built by W.H.Blitch, Sr. -land wise, stretched all the way to the Ogeechee River, and included a toll bridge over the river. There was a general store nearby and the Blitch post office, both of which were owned by the Blitch's. Needless to say they were major landowners and business-men.
Over the years all the outbuildings on the original tract have disappeared -and there is scant evidence of the store, post-office or toll bridge. The home however, stands as one of the last vestiges of an era gone by-in the post civil war time. Although not on the register of historic homes -it certainly is one. In terms of restoration the property is in very good condition--although many would probably want to upgrade the kitchen and baths and maybe add a bathroom.
If you would like to read more historical information-about this fascinating property--- email me and I will send you a copy of the article on the home that was published in Statesboro Magazine, July/Aug. 04. (the mag. is no longer in publication or i'd send a web link) Fyi--the property is only 45 mi. north west of savannah and would make a great B&B--w/ owners quarters. Will be happy to send listing info. --just email me.
