Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City back in 1774 to Richard and Catherine. Her mother died when she was only three. Her father remarried Charlotte. Charlotte would take Elizabeth with her as she visited the poor distributing food and needed items.
The second marriage ended at which time Charlotte rejected Elizabeth and her older sister. When Elizabeth was 19 she married William. During the War of 1812 the family lost all of their possessions, including their home. William was not in the best of health so they moved to Italy. He died there in 1803.
Moving back to New York City she started an academy for young ladies. In 1809, she moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland establishing the Saint Joseph’s Academy and Free School. for the remainder of her life she kept on leading and developing the new congregation. She died in 1821 at the age of 46.
What you may not know about Elizabeth Ann Seton is that she was the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1975. Until tomorrow please pray for the people devastated by Harvey and pass on a smile
