Hurricane update for those who have expressed concern over my family's safety. At this time, the only mandatory evacuation orders are for the Florida Keys and coastal areas of Miami. Regardless of where in Florida one lives, the people that must evacuate are those that live in low lying and flood prone areas and people in mobile homes. The greatest threat is from flooding. People in frame homes need to go too especially with a Cat 4 or 5 winds.
Even though I live less than a mile from the Gulf of Mexico, my house is on one of the highest points in the county and it's at the top of a hill. The house at the bottom of the hill would need to be completely submerged before we would have any flooding at all.
Our issue will be winds and loss of power. We have secured a generator to keep power going and gas to power it. I have a large freezer that is full of food. My home is made of concrete block and I have a superior rated roof that was just replaced last year. I was able to secure 16 gallons of water last night and Erica, who works at CVS will bring home more once the delivery truck arrives on Friday. I also have an outdoor grill with a nearly full tank of propane gas. The best place for us to be is right where we are and we have enough provisions to last us probably 4-5 days.
We will probably feel the worst of the storm on Monday. I will update everyone as the weekend arrives on FB and as long as I have internet service or a charged phone. Everything we can do to be safe has been done. The rest is now up to God. Prayers for all of Florida are appreciated.
