Be A Teacher/Public Speaker To Increase Your Business

By
Mortgage and Lending with New Key Lending

I just finished a conference call with Sue Woodard and special guest Jodee Brydges. The call was about setting your self up as the expert, and educating people out in your communities instead of CNN ( Constant Negative News) as I have heard been called. We are the professionals not the media.

Teach workshops or seminars and you'll be seen as an authority about mortgages. You'll also meet people who are likely to recommend you to friends and family. Who knows...by teaching a mortgage related topic, you may be able to build a useful income stream.

No doubt about it, the mortgage-housing-credit meltdown is affecting all of us. And, if you're still in the Mortgage Business you know how it can affect our industry and how harmful this can be. When the buying, selling, and refinancing of homes is hampered and impaired, we all feel the pain.

There are many that say that what we are experiencing is a natural cycle in the Real Estate/Mortgage Industry, and all of the purging that's taking place is really a good thing. While there is some truth there, it's important to effectively work around these hardships to perpetuate your Mortgage Business.

If you're not already...It's time that you became a teacher...an educator.

And, the name of the game is "WHY IT IS BETTER TO BUY THAN RENT"

"SHOULD I BUY A HOME IN TODAY'S MARKET" is today's hot topic and the basis of the current turmoil in our industry. People are so mixed up in their thoughts, even many professionals in our own industry are telling people not to buy. You have got to be kidding me, when I hear this non sense coming from some of the so called real estate professionals.

1. You are setting yourself apart from other mortgage folks by providing such information.

2. You are adding value to your position and mortgage services.

3. You are giving your customers/prospects another reason to trust you.

4. You are educating a group of home buyers that will benefit you directly over time.

5. You are providing a public service to your prospects and customers.

You need to start doing seminars on why it is better to buy than rent. Instead of 1st time homebuyers seminar (which is very limiting) that is how you market it (why it is better to buy than rent)

Libraries are a good spot to hold these (since it is for education)

Realtor's offices

Title Companies

Community Centers in your city

I have been doing these once a month for the last 6 months, and have obtained a lot of new business from Realtors, Attorneys, and CPA'S.

If anyone is interested in the presentation I use, just email me and I will forward over the slide show.

Bernie - kudos on getting homebuyer workshops to work as a marketing strategy! You must have some sort of follow-up strategy, which is one key to having homebuyer education work.

Have you considered taking your presentation to groups such as PTAs, business groups, networking groups, etc? That way, someone else handles the logistics and you provide the presentation.

Have you started to experience the snow ball effect yet - where you are getting a consistent stream of business?

Anyway, best of luck! I hope this strategy continues to pay off!

Jackie

I find public speaking is often rewarding, even when it is not directly linked to your business.  As a title professional with nearly 10 years of experience in all segments of real estate and mortgage, especially in short sales and REO, I definitely jump at the opportunities to speak on topics that I have a lot of experience or knowledge in that will also potentially increase my title business.

I also speak on behalf of charities that I am very passionate about such as the C.A.R.E. Foundation animal resuce I volunteer at.  ( http://www.thecarefoundation.org )  Speaking about things you are passionate about not only makes you a better and more engaging speaker, but it can also carry over to your business as people see that you are not just speaking for the sake of self-promotion or promoting your business.  Plus you are doing something that benefits others and you should feel good about that regardless if it translates directly to business.

Great idea. I just wish that I had the motivation to plan and give a seminar.  Especially if I get a bunch of people that should really continue to rent that come to the seminar.

On a similar note Bernie, I have went back to the college that I attended and spoke to business seniors about the importance of credit and budgeting.  The company that I work for runs a press release that I will speaking there and a lil blurb about my credentials and the topic.  It is a great way to help perceive you as "an authority".
