McDonald's Arches Are Not So Golden In Sedona AZ ...What?

Sedona - McDonald's "Iconic" Teal Arches

Mcdonalds Arches in Sedona

Sedona Arizona - McDonald's is famous for it branding and marketing campaigns. From Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar to the Big Mac and Chicken McNuggets, the brand is the most identifiable for it's Golden Arches. It is also the most recognizable fast food chain in the world because of those arches.

Sedona Community Development History

Sedona was incorporated in 1988, and it was still in the process of determining it's exterior building and signage restrictions. Along came McDonald's (circa 1992) proposing to build a restaurant. Those who know Sedona, understand that obtrusively bright and showy buildings or signage would never pass muster with the Community Development Department. Nicholas Gioello, manager for the department, stated, "We want everything to blend into the natural surroundings, which includes mostly earth tones. The view is really why people come to Sedona."

There is a standing joke about exterior paint colors that goes something like this... Here in Sedona, our local paint stores offer every color you want...as long as it is a shade of brown.

In fact, Sedona did it's best to limit fast food or big box stores for the longest time. Today you can find a smattering of recognizable brands throughout the city. To this day, Sedona has strict regulations on outdoor lighting, signage and exterior design and paint color.

McDonald's Teal Arches

Teal Arches

Whether you call these arches green, turquoise, or teal, McDonald's and the city came to an agreement based on the location of the restaurant in our Safeway (now Albertson's) shopping center, to have unobtrusive arches. The arches could not be on a pole. This all happened within a year and the store opened in 1993.

Social Media Impact

These teal arches are the only in the world on a McDonald's. Fueled by social media, this story has made news all over the world.  People come from everywhere to take a picture in front of these arches.  They put these pictures on their social media pages. It is a one of a kind branding element.

Question to all

After seeing the teal arch, is it the color of the arches or the iconic design of the "M" that makes the brand?

Interesting question at the end, I think people recognize the shape first, the color is not so important but sure branding specalists will disagree.

Hi Nick & Trudy,

I think you nailed it. You can argure that the packaging like the fries box has the distinctive color of red and yellow. But as you say, the branding specialists will have their own take.

Hi Kat,

I did when we first saw them back in 1994 or 1995. (?) When we moved here, I always wanted to find out about the back story.

Hi Sheri

Good for Sedona for staying strong on their philosophy on colors. I like the teal despite not being a MacDonald's fan. No doubt it's been great marketing for them!

Hi Gita,

These arches have been here since 1993 but it took the Internet to make them famous.

I like when they do restrictions like this to keep a town or city looking a certain way. Would much prefer that over all the commercial sign clutter we have!

Great post! I enjoyed reading this and the comments!

Hi Sharon,

For the longest time, Sedona did not want to see typical franchises. Design compromises seems to work.

Hi Kristin,

Mickey D had to decide if building a franchise in Sedona was worth the change....I guess they decided right!

We have a few new remodeled McDonald's in Sacramento that seem to have streamlined the building, but the golden arches are still on the sign. I like the teal, too. It seems to say Sedona!

While the color may throw a few off I believe the iconic "M" will send the message McDonald's wants to be heard.
