Anna has made an excellent point.. send the thank you card, or make the call.. it will get to be a habit and you will be so glad that you did.
Networking has been an important part of my business model from my first years in the real estate business. I was fortunate to have a broker/mentor show me the ropes and get me involved (whether I wanted to or not). He also pretty much made me (or so it seemed at the time) to join committees as well as volunteer to be an ambassador or whatever else they needed. I've belonged to a couple of Chambers and other network groups and have also have created successful network groups. It's no surprise that networking at this point is 'fun' to me. I couldn't say that 30 years ago! And, sure networking brings in business but what I enjoy the most is meeting new folks, having meaningful conversations and building long term relationships.
This past week at a network meeting it dawned on me that most people are missing out on a Huge Networking Opportunity. At most network meetings members donate door prizes. Everyone loves this part of the meeting and they get amped up about their chance to win a prize. It's always fun to win a door prize! But what happens after one wins a coveted door prize? Surprisingly not much other than a thank you - and that's a maybe.
Hello – can you say HUGE missed Networking opportunity?
After winning a door prize it would be a perfect opportunity to write a personal note or make a coffee/lunch date with the person who donated the prize. Duh?
Isn't the idea of networking to build relationships with the other members of your group or organization? So why not take the opportunity to thank the person who donated the gift and make it a WIN–WIN all the way around?
I’m sitting here thinking that I can count on one hand the number of people over the few last years who have made a point to write a note or take me to coffee/lunch after receiving one of my door prizes. And honestly I've been just as clueless when I've won a door prize (most of the time). If I were to count up all the missed networking opportunities over the last 30 years it would be in the hundreds. HUNDREDS OF MISSED OPPORTUNITIES! Light bulb moment! Pretty good wake up call don't you think!
Are you missing out on a HUGE Networking Opportunity?
