An unusual argument for indoor recess . . . Centennial, WY

Surely, students in our area are not the only ones subject to the occasional indoor recess.  The main culprits here are usually rain or extreme cold - defined as temperatures below zero degrees farenheit for our school district.Sign on Playground Live in Laramie Real Estate

The town of Centennial live at the base of the mountains just 30 minutes from Laramie.  While photographing the Centennial Elementary  playground, I was curious about this sign. Upon closer inspection my curiousity turned to surprised amusement.  As a longtime Laramie resident, even I wasn't expecting this:

Oh, my!  Looks like more than the children had been spotted enjoying the playground.

I don't know if the kids really had to have indoor recess or not, but apparently recess was not to be taking place on this section of the playground at this time.

Before you have visions of giant, claw traps the could snap shut on unsuspecting children and passers by  (as I did for a moment, lol!) below is the actual bear trap.  I hadn't noticed it at first...

Oh, the stories the students at Centennial Elementary will be able to tell one day!

Our current Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, was kind of mocked for talking about some schools needing guns for protection against bears. She wasn't wrong. Our school in Wapiti (halfway between Cody and Yellowstone National Park) has a bear fence around it after multiple sitings of Grizzlies.

And her actual point was that local schools should have the freedom to decide if they want to allow teachers to bring guns to school. What a concept.

Oh my goodness, I grew up in Alaska and have son and grandsons who live in Juneau. We know about the reality of sharing space with bears. Glad the school was pro-active and is taking precautions.

Hi Brenda Whitman, Live in Laramie Real Estate , I don't know why, but I'm surprised by the sign too- I've never seen one before.  I hope they catch the bear so the kids can go outside and play again.  At Red Feather elementary they have moose drills- what to do if a moose comes onto the playground -)

What a story and great information for people in the area and travelers too. Signs like this must put teachers and parents on high alert!

I just got back from Montana where forest fires were still burning. I asked what happens to all the Grizzlies and other wildlife and was told, they are smart enough to know where there's smoke there's fire and they venture off to other locations. It sounds like some of them may have  found their way to Centennial, WY.

funny -  and I thought that when I read the headline - it would be because it was too hot or too cold.  We had indoor recess here several years ago because of a sniper who killed about random eight people as they went about their daily lives - pumping gas, walking to the bus - the entire metro area was terrorized.  It turned out he was planning to kill his ex wife and he wanted to mask it in the rest of the chaos-  I like the bear sign- didn't like the sniper.  It is a tough world we are raising our children in.
